Hey all.... except for a few brief moments I've been in a self enforced "computer-free zone" since last Friday evening.

Like a breath of fresh air... AAAhhhhh.

Steve great review of the Paladino's show! It was great hanging with you too bud! And no I still can't hear so you'll have to type louder. OK?

It's OK being the designated driver... but much more fun being the designated drunk!

WishboxROXX! And continues to impress!!! THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW GUYS!!! And thank you too TLO! It looks like Steve got the setlist exact. I liked the addition of Statesboro Blues to the encore. It really gives Mike and Mark a chance to "show off" and stretch out a bit. Impressive guys! Yes a really great show! All in all worth every cent of the $15 cover.

Two Thumbs Up!

Simon Wright was an unexpected treat! Not only for the audience but for Wishbox too. They just found out minutes before they started the encore that he was going to sit in! TOOCOOL!

In other news...

Rich you're welcome.

TonyD - you're kidding right?

Cindy - Good to hear from you!!! Snow??? What is this thing you speak of... Snow? LOL!

I'll manage to fit in an archive sometime today. Which reminds me - I grow weary of this message board and it's outdated methods. It is antiquated and cumbersome to maintain. Expect something new and completely different in the not too distant future.

Off to work...

No matter how far away he moves from the average rock fan's consciousness, one thing you can always count on from '70s guitar hero Pat Travers is guaranteed fret-board excitement and a certain element of surprise. Or can you? Whatever your thoughts on the matter, there's no question that, unlike many of his increasingly obsolete and desperate contemporaries, Travers seems at once both more accepting of his diminishing role in the international arena and unwilling to allow this negative perception to in any way tarnish his love of performance. Boasting a typically pyrotechnic display of his legendary six-string abilities, the P.T. Power Trio album finds Travers — alongside aging drum colossus Aynsley Dunbar and relative unknown bassist Gunter Nezhoda — tackling blues staples as well as psychedelic and classic rock standards with taste and vivacity. Among the standout tracks, one finds astoundingly precise and faithful renditions of Cream's "White Room" (complete with wah-wah flourishes that Eric Clapton himself might have a hard time replicating these days), Robin Trower's "Day of the Eagle," Free's "Fire and Water," ZZ Top's "Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings," and even Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." In short, it's entirely feasible that these wizened old pros could have thrown this entire set together in a single, bored weekend; such is the innate, effortless genius of their musical talent. But considering it makes for such an easy and familiar listening experience, who really cares? — Ed Rivadavia

I thought this was a great review. Especially like the remake of the Point Blank song "Free Man"

Hey Tony D,

You are kidding right?

You do know that "Ed The Edge" is the same Ed that maintains this very website. The old URL was www.edtheedge.com (I think) before it officially became www.pattravers.com.

With all this talk of Majestic Rock reissuing PTs old Polydor releases, I hope they do a better job than OneWay Records did on "Putting It Straight/Heat In The Street". My first 4 Heat In The Street songs sound muffled on the OneWay re-issue.

I spoke to Eddie Wilner at OneWay Records about this and he basically told me the old "garbage in/garbage out" theory. I proceeded to tell him to check out the Japanese Polydor CD release (or better yet, the Polydork version from Ginbel on Ebay).

The one I'm eagerly awaiting for is "Hot Shot". The vinyl never sounded too good IMHO.

Apparently OneWay will also be releasing some remastered PT next year sometime. Eddie Wilner has told me that they will be releasing the following in regular and limited edition signature slipcases:

Pat Travers(debut)/Making Magic

Radioactive/Black Pearl (this may actually turn out to be Radioactive/Hot Shot)

If there are better stereo sources out there, then why do these reissue companys insist on using newly provided stereo DAT tapes from the original issuing labels for their remastering projects. Many times these stereo DAT tapes are run off from very old studio stereo master tape reels which have not fared well over time. The original CD issue from 20 years ago usually sounds better overall than these new remastered reissues. I'm referring mainly to tape dropout and overall sound degradation. The new remastered reissues have better eq and compression, but you can tell in many spots where the original master tape has deteriorated over time.

I think this is my longest post ever :) Sorry about that :(

Hey Ed,

I have Rich's Black Pearl Live CD and do agree that it was a stellar performance! My only grip with the CD is that it appears to be sonically suffering from low bandwidth (like a webcast with low bandwidth). It's especially noticable when you increase the treble (cymbals sound like breaking windows) .

I've discussed this with Rich and he seems to think they sound fine. He even allowed me to exchange it for another copy (thanks again Rich), but the exchanged copy sounds the same. I can tell it's from vinyl and being that it was never commercially released, it must be from one of those radio broadcast albums (like you said).

I was wondering if a CD copy of your tape could be made available. :)

Hey all,

Regarding the Black Pearl "Live" recording...
All of the sonic issues in question are due to it being a radio broadcast from way back in the early 80's, and committed to vinyl. Technology has vastly improved since then (CD's weren't even available at the time!), so limitations from broadcasts recorded from back then should be expected. This was originally a Westwood One broadcast, which was fortunately some of the best "live" recordings back then. And radio broadcasts, due to the nature of the beast, are heavily compressed anyway. (This is part of the problem with the sound of the cymbals you talk about MissingMars). We should be glad that the original source was as good as it was even if it does pale somewhat compared to todays standards. If anyone can track down the pre-broadcast masters, then there might be a better source, provided the tape hasn't degenerated too much over the years. As my recording engineer friend states..."You can't polish a turd". Not to call this recording a "turd" at all, but we just have to accept the limitations of past technology. Sure you can remove hiss, use subtle EQ, manipulate compression & limiting and so on, but you can't cure all the sonic issues no matter how hard you try or how many tools you have in the studio. Improvements yes, perfection no. It's certainly still an easy recording to listen to, in my modest opinion. I'm just glad it was recorded in the first place! I agree with Edgy Ed, it's a killin' performance!

Randal S & Ehm...come on down and get that frosty Grant's, my man! It's here waiting on you!

Yo Cindy, it's a beautiful day here on the west coast! You moved inland to where the weather is brutal through the winter! WHY??? Lol!

Currently spinning Foghat's "Rock & Roll Outlaws" today. Some great tracks on this one...my favorite Fogger disc. R.I.P. Lonesome Dave...

And as always...PTB is King!

Hey, anyone know where I might be able to locate a copy of PT back mid 80's on King Biscuit. the one I am thinking of was with the Black Pearl album. I think PT was touring with B.O.C. back then. There was a killer version of Hammerhead that still brings chills after all these years when I think about it. Wish I had all the free time some of you folks have, I could spend a month following around the band. PT Rocks!!

Looking forward to the Jaxx gig (11/1) and partyin' with Rich and Nancy again !

Steve Z -- You mentioned G3..what are your thoughts on putting Yngwie on that tour? Haven't we "been there, done that"? Last time I saw him he still put on a respectable show, but was disgusted by him showing midriff with his additional poundage, apparently he still thinks he's a sex symbol? The worst part, I thought, was he was selling T-shirts and posters emblazoned with "Yngwie J. Malmsteen - Guitar Legend". Can we say "egomaniac"?

Still, considering going just to see Joe and little Stevie Vai (such a nice little boy!) Maybe I'll get there late on purpose

Hope everyone is well...peace

Hey Carl,

Yeah, I've been to quite a few of the G3 tours now. The original one with Joe, Steve & Eric Johnson was my favorite, with the last one with John Petrucci a close second. I hear ya on Yngwie! No doubt, he was an innovator and very influential in his day, but that day was about 15 years ago! I loved the first Rising Force album when it came out, but he was never able to move on and progress, and that is not to even mention his attitude! But I wouldn't dream of missing his set in this show, just to see how he tries to out-do Steve & Joe (and you KNOW he will try!). There's a lot of guitar fans who really can't stand him, so it outta be interesting!
Satriani & Vai fans ->

Hi to all of you PT fans. I'm a newbie here - this is my first post. Believe it or not, I "discovered" Pat Travers only recently - about 2-3 months ago - while doing some "research" on a file-sharing site, looking for covers of some blues classics. In this particular case, I stumbled on PT's version of "Born Under a Bad Sign". My intention was to burn onto a CD various interpretations of certain songs. I was blown away by PT's version and proceeded to find out more about him. I found out that he comes from Canada. I am Canadian too and I could kick myself for not having been turned on to PT before! Anyway, it's never too late. Since then I have introduced PT's music to many of my friends. I often check out this website to see if and when PT will come back to perform in Canada, especially in the Ottawa/Montreal area.

I am also an avid David Gogo fan. I can assure you that if you love PT, you will also love David Gogo's stuff. He's also Canadian, from B.C., and is an extraordinary guitarist. A few years back, Gogo walked away from a deal with EMI/Capitol Music because they tried to force into a musical direction he didn't care for. A couple of weeks ago, I did a post on Gogo's site forum and when I suggested that he tour the U.S., I jokingly - well half-jokingly, at least - proposed that he ask Pat Travers for pointers. PT's and Gogo's music have many similarities: high energy/electric blues-rock. I would love to hear Gogo do a cover of PT's "Calling Card Blues" and "Too Cool woman Blues", although it would be hard to improve on PT's... but, believe me, if anyone can, it would be David Gogo. In turn, PT could do a cover of Gogo's "(Just Ask) Jesse James" on his recent "Skeleton Key" CD. If you're interested in David Gogo, you could check out his website: www.davidgogo.org

It's not easy to come by samples of his music though... but I am 99.99% sure that you will like his stuff.

I am very impressed by PT's loyal following on this message board. I just can't wait to get to see PT perform live. C'mon PT, come back and play in my neck of the woods!

PT Rocks!

And finally, Amgwanna Kick Booty is without a doubt, one of the BEST rock & roll instrumentals ever! (ok, it's got that "Wanna kick booty" line, but it's basically an instrumental!)

Steve! So you gotta let us "who weren't allowed to go" know how your Topless Caberet gig went down :) Ditto on Amgwanna... If it weren't for Electric Detective - Kick Booty would be my favorite instrumental!

TCF - Had you heard Pat before you first saw him? I went to see Journey in Köln, Germany 1979 wondering who Pat Travers was (because he was opening). I left that show wondering who Journey was.

Finally from the "Wow this is weird department..." check this out.

Ed, I think you forget who I was dating (when I was 16)at that time and got married to, that is all we ever listened to, was PT! (with the exception of UFO, Thin Lizzy, Molly Hatchet, etc...) but PT was the main record (lol) really dating ourselves! playing in our home!

Ed are you coming up for any of the No. Cali shows? Let me know, Arleene and I will defintely be hitting most of them!

Finally got pictures back from the Tahoe gig, Darren, Kathy, Betty, Randal, TonyLo, Blu, have some good ones of all of you! And of that wonderful 15 minute hail storm when everybody crowded in to the tent!

To Hooked on PT, Cindy, TraversChickFan, Sandy & Ed

Thanks for the welcome. I hope I wasn't being rude by talking about another artist - David Gogo - on the PT Message Board. I apologize to those who might think so. No disrespect was intended. It was meant as a ... hmmm... tip to blues-rock fans, especially the high-energy kind. People on this board often say how great it is to see PT perform live and I very much look forward to that day!

JDog

P.S. To Sandy - go see David Gogo at the Yale (Vancouver, B.C.) tonight! Gogo's live show will blow your mind! By the way, Gogo does something cool - and it's not as gimmicky as it may sound - in his shows: he plays a cordless guitar (if that's how you call it) and the first time I saw him - I was at the bar and hadn't been looking at the stage for a while and lo' and behold - there was Gogo behind the bar playing his guitar with the bottleneck of the Corona he'd just guzzled down right there behind the bar!

Hooked,

I'm always changing the home page around. I put the Acoustic pic back up because Pat's playin' a solo acoustic show here in SoCal in a cupla weeks.

I added a CSS style sheet (finally)

And I put the old 9-11 animation up for a while to commemorate the 9-11 anniversary. But I've since replaced that with brand new animation.

Web pages never stop evolving. Unfortunately most of the time they evovle in the most minescule of details so that the users never even see any difference at all. Webmasters know of what I speak.

It's a boring web page that never changes.

I have a large database of archieved home pages and pictures that I like to reuse from time to time.

Thanks for noticing....

Cindy - The first PT album I heard was Makin' Magic.

After seeing Pat in Köln in 79 I couldn't find any of his albums anywhere over in Europe. But I went home on leave shortly thereafter and bought the first three. I can still remember sitting on the floor at my parents house holding all three in my hand still unopened trying to decide which one to listen to first.

I chose Makin Magic and it's been my favorite ever since. I can still remember the grin on my face and releif in my soul while listening to that album for the first time. I knew immediately that I had finally found a guitarist that was playing EVERYTHING the way I always thought and imagined it should be played. I easily wore out a half dozen Makin Magic's during my vinyl years and was commited to reel to reel and cassette many times also...

I often wonder what I would have though about the PTB had I heard an album before seeing them. I just remember being totally blown away by someone I had never even heard of before!

I mean I was blown away by Robben Ford a couple of years back but his reputation preceeded him.

I had never even heard word one about Pat before that show in 79. Afterall I was stationed at a remote radar site on top of a mountain in Germany. We got hardly any Rock and Roll news there.

Hey all, I haven't posted a message in a couple of years, but I feel I had to after going to see PT last night at the Hemmens in Elgin,IL. I had not seen PT in a number of years (or with current bandmates) and I just wanted to say that PT still kicks booty. This makes 14 times seeing PT and he has never failed to inspire me. He was the main reason I got serious about the guitar back in '77 (I believe) when Mars ,Tommy and PT set foot in the US after releasing Puttin' It Straight. Good day to all PT fans !!!!

How about...

Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush for an opener...

Pat in the middle...

and Rush closing the show?

That would be THE Canadian ax-fest!

By the way - Frank Marino has a new live 2 CD set coming out soon. I've heard a few boots from the same tour and they are incredible sounding. I can't wait to get this official release.

Here's an mp3 teaser of the official release that's on the way:

Frank's got a new record contract and 3-4 albums will be re-released and the deal includes a DVD production as well.

I also missed the Rush/PT show in '78 in San Francisco. I had friends that went, too! I've since become a huge Rush fan as well, so that bill would be 2 great acts to see.

Ed, the topless gig was, well, quite an experience, on many levels! I'll tell ya more next time I see ya!

Still hoping I can swing the Coach House. I may just take the whole day off to recover from the House of Blues the night before, which will make San Juan a lot more do-able! I also have Zepagain on Fri the 10th, and now Fireball again on Sat the 11th at Paladino's.

Cheers!

Hey who is going to the No.Cal shows, October, and November? Daryl and I are leaving for Hawaii on Oct. 24th and we return on Nov.13th, so sadly we won't be able to go to the Nov. shows, we will have missed too much time from work, It would also be pretty hard for Daryl to make it up for thre October shows, so we probably are going to have to miss out. We could postpone Hawaii......... Hmmmm? Nah I think we'll just have to tough out the dissapointment. Scott Jo? Where you at? Ken you gettin soft out there havent seen you at the gym? Wassup?

It don't get any better than PT, Zepagain and Fireball.

Hey Steve you should just economize and reform your groups - something like:

Sorry to say Randy that I was never much of a Frank Marino fan.

The guy is an awesome frettist. But just doesn't have that biting feel that I crave when it comes to guitar players. But then again I'm a slow learner. It took me years and years to finally realize that I love the likes of Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Robben Ford, The Eagles and many others I don't dare mention here.... :)

But if you want to book Frank with Pat and Rush I promise I'll go and I promise I'll give Frank another honset listen.

TCF - you posting pictures soon, Regina?

OH MY EFFING GOODNESS

I went to see Radiohead last night with Supergrass (it was). WHAT A SHOW. Don't miss this if you have a chance to go -- I was absolutely amazed by Radiohead's awesome musicianship and fantastic light show. I'm listening to OK Computer now and getting goosebumps - maybe it's just the A/C! No, it's the vibe.

Saw one poor guy who was sitting way up on the lawn with legs crossed, head down, facing AWAY from the stage toward the sound wall -- must have dropped one of the orange ones!! YIKES -- I think Radiohead might have blown his mind for good if he did! EXTREMELY trippy . . .

Supergrass was quite good too - my guitarist and I agreed that we'd buy their stuff.

In summary, wow wow wow wow wow
