Some pics of Jerry Riggs on the Glenn Hughes Picture Gallery site: http://fanforum.ghpg.net/2/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=714094744&f=340099154&m=1833046427

Not sure if you have to register to see them.

That's the first picture I've seen of Jerry Riggs in about 8 years. I wouldn't have recognized him without the hair. You would never know that's Barry Dunaway either if you looked at his picture on the cover of "Hot Shot".

TC - Thanks for the link! Cool pics!

Blu - consider yourself e-mailed.

Kathi - I'll let you guys know just as soon as I know.

Randy - Camera right was mine. The NYE DVD was the very first video that I EVER shot. I just picked up my camera a week or so before the show. I had no idea what I was doing. Still don't.

GuitarmanX - welcome aboard! I'm an Ex-Long Islander myself!

Stalker - I WANT A COPY OF YOUR PICS!!! I ALWAYS DO!

Gotta run!

Have a great week everyone!

GuitarMan, welcome! Where do you live in Long Island, my cousins are from S. Setauket. One of my cousins played hockey his whole life in that area. I used to love going to Long Island, I myself was born in Queens.

Blu, will call you when we get in Friday night!

Everyone have a great week. Two Graduations down! Oldest from high school and youngest from Jr. High! Thank Goodness that is over!

Blu, looks like I'm gonna be all set. I'm heading up to Sac tomorrow morning to do some legwork on the pending contract, and might sign a smaller one while I'm there. My b-day is Thursday and while it would be very cool to come to Tahoe for the night, I can't swing it right now. BTW, Keith Powers, my new business partner will be with me at Zephyr Cove -- he's cool and will fit right in with the PT bunch

so we're Gettin' Bette? COOL! I look forward to meeting Kathi and others on the Lake -- it should be gorgeous in July

In response to Randy's:

I'm guessing the camera on the right had the automatic exposure on and the filmer didn't go to manual exposure (I'm not trying to knock the filmer - I've got no idea who it was - just stating a fact from the technical side of things). The result is that things tend to look too bright or whited out at times.

What I forgot to mention is that Randy is DEAD ON CORRECT - I did exactly what he said I did. Overexposed EVERYTHING. Oh and BTW, the filmer does not feel slighted in the least especially by proper critisim...

The show in Tahoe doesn't start till 3, we could just come up for the day, and go home that night but where is the fun in that?
Where is Zephyr Cove located in Tahoe anyway? That would help me to know that huh!
Tell me all you know, maybe I'll be your puupy dog and do what you do ha ha!

That's no joke! Jerry had the quintessential big hair 80s 'do in the Toronto video. He may have lost the hair, but I'll bet his guitar playing still smokes!

Ed - I filmed Twisted Sister last month here in Korea at a free concert they did for the troops. I got an incredible shot... however, many of the non-closeup shots of Dee Snider were totally overexposed.

This filmer set me straight at the Twisted Sister fan board. I checked my camera and realized that it automatically starts up with auto-exposure and it's set to the max. It's got a little button that I can push to go to manual exposure and there's a wheel on there that I can turn to adjust it. It can all be done while the camera is filming - don't even have to look at the button/wheel because you can see the settings inside the viewfinder. I'd imagine most newer cameras are like this (mines a Sony TRV-330 digital 8).

Another good tip that I got from him - when filming a concert, the onboard mike almost never can handle the volume, so you want to get an external mic. Almost any external mic, even some crappy cheapo from Radio Shack, will improve the quality of the audio.

Live and learn and pass it on :-)

Randy,

Thanks for the tips! I realized the the auto setting was useless for concert footage when I filmed Zepagain at the House Of Blues in Anaheim. All of the overexposed shots would constantly go in and out of focus and basically do all sorts of weird things.

I've used the manual settings ever since. But I'm still having to deal with the long painful learning curve. :)

manual's the way to go I think. Haven't done filming, but I like it for regular photography. It's nice to be able to control each aspect; exposure, speed, etc. You can get some great effects that way.

Are you able to adjust depth of field with a video the way you can with a good still camera?

Eric, sounds like things are going great for you and Rick! Good for you guys!

Steve, the double that my husbands band played the other night, didn't go to bad! had that shot of "Hot Damn"! It was my hubbys birthday the next day so at midnight, both bands got up and did a special dedication to him! He hates the focus on him, oh well we all enjoyed it! The bands are playing the same night that PT is playing in Capitola, looks like I will have to miss that one, but on the 10th in San Jose and the 12th in Santa Cruz, those should be good!

Hey Jim, you know anyone in San Jose that wants to buy a Jeep Wrangler, selling mine also selling my BMW 750 IL. Pass the word! Thanks.

Everyone have a great day!

As I sit and watch this amazing DVD that I recently received from Rich and Nancy (ginbels), I am blown away. Mainly I am blown away by the amount of sometimes thankless hours that these guys have put into the P.T.B. It's not to often that someone dedicates so much of their personal time and money just to benefit annother. I cringe every time I see a post where someone is pointing out FLAWS in the production quality of one these GINBEL productions. Let me tell ya', Rich takes a what seems to be worthless VHS tape that I've had in storage for a year and turns it into a DVD with enhanced sound and effects. AWESOME!!!!!! Then this New Years DVD...HOLY S%&T! Pat himself was overly impressed with this latest endeavor. GREAT job by everyone who was involved. I just wanted to post a little credit where credit is due, and discount any ridiculous production FLAW statements. "Those who Can DO!" "Those who CAN'T sit around and talk about how they would do it!"! We Love ya' Ginbels. Thank you, ERIC

First off, I hope they have the foresight to film this and make a DVD - that will no doubt sell nicely. Secondly, if they don't have the foresight, I hope someone (several someones - actually) is able to shoot this and we can at least get a decent boot DVD out of it. Thirdly, Sammy can be pretty egotistical... I hope he can allow himself to go back 30 years and be the lead vocalist for Montrose and recreate the old chemistry and not let egos get in the way. And fourthly... why don't things like this happen more often?

Wuss or not, Eddie Van Halen should never be discredited when it comes to guitar playing. His work speaks for itself. Regardless of anybody's opinion of the band Van Halen (Roth, Hagar or Cherone era) Eddie will go down in history as a groundbreaking artist, and deservedly so. Can others play better than him? Sure. Are others possibly more creative than him? Certainly. But never underestimate Eddie's contribution to the rock guitar vocabulary. The guy raised the bar on so many levels it's ridiculous. I'll argue that point to my grave. Personally, Jeff Beck does more for me these days that Eddie's last few releases, but I will forever defend Ed's guitar work. I only wish Ed would do a killer instrumental solo release. I know there's one in him somewhere!

Mini Me....are your talents as big as your ego and criticism of others? Is your work available so the rest of us can judge YOUR contributions? Dude, you need to relax and keep things positive.
If you're gonna rag on someone, you should at least explain WHY you dislike them. Do you personally know Eddie well enough that you can justify calling him a wuss? And your tirade against Eric is really growing old with all of us here. You sound like a disgruntled drummer who lost out a band audition to Eric and now you have the grudge. That's certainly how you're coming across.....

Randal, best of luck with the P.A. project. You've certainly put in the hard work. Hope it pays off for you. Thanks for keeping me updated. You know I'm rootin' for ya.

Rgarding the Pacific Northwest gigs that are coming up. Are there any confirmations on who will be playing with Pat those nights? Eric & Rick? Wishbox? Somebody else? Anybody know? Who's playing with Pat will determine if I make the shows or not. Any info that someone can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Brian Maybe...in your Sheer Heart Attack tribute band, what was your personal favorite early Queen track that you played, and what (to you) was the most difficult? Their first 3 releases before they became huge were simply amazing, I thought.

And as always...PTB is King!

Ouch, I am blushing. Thanx Eric! We had a LOT to work with thanx to the talents of the band members!! The best part is we captured a great moment in history for all to enjoy for all time AND we were there to be a part of it! By the by, not one to rest on our laurels... we are working on sending you guys a nice fat box of these. We have had to upgrade our "production facility" LOL! Soooo old mini got das boot. good. Was it just me or did he seem some how less than appreciative of Erics talents? Hmmm... LOL! Hey we can accept that...(not), but when you start slamming Eddie VanHampster... that's a whole other issue. Sure he is the king of hammer ons, but he has got to be one of the best guitarists ever. Hey Eric, what's that saying, "Don't sweat the petty things, & don't pet the sweaty things!" Definitely don't pet that sweaty, er, sweat that petty individual! Watching Rich's NYE DVD is a great reminder of a great trio I got to see a few times, of which you are a great part of! Hope it goes well with the second guitarist (but next time, call me, would ya?!)

Rockpig, yes, the first 3 Queen albums are amazing! I'd even go up through the first 5, but I get your point. Toughest thing we ever pulled off in the band was opening up a show with the "Black Side" of Queen 2. Ogre Battle, straight through March of the Black Queen (left Seven Seas of Rhye for later in the set). Half the crowd loved it, and half went, "Huh? This isn't Bohemian Rhapsody!"

I always dig doing any of that early stuff, like Liar, Brighton Rock (with extended guitar solo!), Doing All Right...

Randall, happy 39th all over again! Will keep you posted on the SD gig, just waiting for them to confirm...

And Randy, hell YES they should shoot that Montrose reunion for a DVD!! I can't believe that show is NOT playing in CA, dammit! Maybe if they go well...

Cheers!

I can only speak from my experiences on this one. I graduated high school in '79. In the spring of my junior year, I went down to the local record shop (I probably hit it about 2-3 times a week) and bought Van Halen's first album based strictly on how cool the album cover looked. I had never even heard of the band before and the only thing I knew was that the album was brand spanking new and the album cover looked really cool.

I went home and put the album on the turntable and from the opening bars of Runnin' With The Devil, I knew this was something really special - especially the guitar playing. And then the second cut - Eruption - my jaw literally dropped. I couldn't believe my ears. I went back and replayed Eruption several times. I was dumbfounded.

It only took a few weeks before Van Halen was blaring out of half the car stereos in town.

For the next three or four years, Eddie Van Halen was unquestionably the most influential guitarist in rock and roll. Note: I don't mean to say he the most influential guitarist on rock music - but the most influential on rock guitarists. If you could pull off a good rendition of Eruption - you were the s#%+. If you couldn't... oh well.

With the possible exception of Wipeout (and maybe Stairway to Heaven) are there any other songs like that?

Mean people are just dumbasses who think it's okay to be mean to others. It is not okay. Nice people do not like mean people. Nice people will only tolerate mean people for so long. Nice people will beat the hell out of mean people after they've had to put up with their stupid crap when it goes too far.

Mean people are ignorant BLANKS (fill in preferred expletive -- thanks Strat) -- there is no excuse for their stupidity, rudeness, lack of tact and especially their NERVE in presuming to annoy everyone around them. Look how cool Pat is! He'd be very pissed if he knew that mean people were afoot -- so mean people, stand advised -- you are not welcome here!

(sound of nice person jumping off of soap box)

I pre ordered two tickets to the PT appearance on Fri night, 8/1/03, @ the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa.

http://www.tommybolin.org/bolinfest_2003.html

Any other PT listers going? If so, I'd like to hook up with you. Let me know privately please @

epcjimi@yahoo.com

PT in Iowa? This is a curious thing to me.

Anyone want to guess the last time PT showed up in the land of corn and soybeans? Myself, I have no idea. Has PT ever appeared in IA?

Does anybody care? :)

Jeez, I hope PT covers Tommy B @ the festival.

Post Toastie? Wild Dogs? Shake the Devil? The Grind? Homeward Strut?

God bless ya Tommy B, where ever you are.

And don't forget that Clear Lake, IA, is the place that the music died - Big Bopper, Richie V + Buddy H.

It's a humbing experience to go to the end of the runway in Clear Lake and there is the sign, 'At this place...etc, etc, etc', well, check it out @

http://www.fiftiesweb.com/crash.htm

And as the Big Bopper said -

Chantilly lace + and a pretty face, and a pony tail,

hanging down,

with a wiggle in her walk and a giggle in her talk,

Whew!

It makes the world go round, round, round..

Best to all,

T

Here's a cool link to the venue where the Tommy Bolin Festival will be held that Pat & Glenn will be appearing at. This place has a very cool history, and is like stepping back in time. Worth taking a quick look at. Sure wish I could make this one....Pat & Glenn at a Bolin Tribute Fest? Hard to imagine how cool this show will be.

I finally found da pics of da guyz from Cocoa Beach Floriduh from this past Memorial Day. I scanned about 2 dozen into my kumpewtr so`s if anybody wants me to e-mail them to ya just drop a note to inboard@earthlink.net . They`re nothing special, but nobody can beat my prices! I was having a flash problem that afternoon. My camera stuff, like me, is getting to damn old! The files are about 2.3 mb, so`s if ya got a dial up modem it`ll take about 20 minutes or so to download into yer e-mail. S'later, JH

P.S. Hey Eric, I`ll snail mail ya all the pics this week. Tell Angie I said "smooch", but don`t tell Rick I said "smooch".

2 new PT releases coming next month (don't get too excited though...)

July 1 - From the Front Row...Live. This is the DVD Audio reissue of the King Biscuit CD, live from 1984.

July 15 - 20th Century Masters: The Millenium Collection. Polydork attempts to cash in with another PT greatest hits CD, while they let One Way release the full albums? Now, how many songs will there be that weren't on Best Of..? Just enough to try to get the die-hards to buy it, I bet! This series usually has really cool pictures on the covers, though, so go have a look at it in your local record store!

Ed, you will LOVE the Zep DVD! It's awesome!

Cheers!

FREIGHTTRAIN - whuzzup, Holmes?? Good to know you're on the PTB Train again -- hope to catch you at a gig soon. Say hi to Pat and Rick for me too

A Seattle friend of mine is an acquaintance of Buck. We're thinking seriously about booking PTBOC at my Marriott if I can get it built. The appeal decision is due next Wed, so if there are no further delays we'll be looking at summer '04. Olympic Peninsula, Washington -- a most excellent location! Stay tuned

Rich Ginbelly, tried to call ya but can't locate your number. Please eme to talk about the Winona Rider for a PTB gig.

Blu, we're looking great for Zephyr -- looks like we're gonna get all 6 projects from the school district instead of the two we were hoping for.

Ed -- I think I mentioned this before but Buck absolutely blew me away at that show in 2000. Having seen him five times before dating back to '77, I didn't think it was POSSIBLE for him to play any faster or better -- but he did! PT is still my number one, but Buck is a badass mofo, no question!

Stratmaster Flash, the two ice cold Grant's you have sitting on the table are working on me. There's a wedding in August that might bring me to Atrocities, so it'd be a short hop to see ya. Keeping my fingers crossed -- it would be very cool to see and hear some of PT's best in the Pat Travers National Monument, aka your house!

Lukather is a lean MEAN six string machine, and highly underrated......

Schenker gets more "rock" tone out of a simple Marshall, Flying V and Wah pedal set-up than an armload of other guitarists with their huge custom effects racks! Shame he's a wiggy feller at this point......

Hi everyone!! I'm new here and just had a question. Has anyone heard of where Mars has been? I love the new band of course, but I think it would be great to hear some new stuff from the lineup of Thrall, Cowling, Aldridge, and PT. By the way, the new album kicks butt!!

Blur, The Yardbirds have their original drummer, Jim McCarty, and rhythm guitarist, Chris Dreja. New guys are bass/vocals, John Idan and lead guitarist, Gypie Mayo. They also had a harmonica player & percussionist. Check out their bio on www.favorednations.com

Gypie Mayo did a fine job, not a flashy player, but lots of soul & inventiveness to his solos. And John Idan played & sang with a lot of enthusiasm.

Hey Ebrecht,

By the looks of my username I think you know where I stand on Mars Cowling! He truly is one of my favorite bass players of all times.

Earlier this year, he did hop on stage with his bass along with Nico McBrain on drums (the classic Makin' Magic and Putting It Straight line-up) to jam on a couple of tunes with Pat. I saw pictures either here on this site or somebody had a link on this message board to them. Either way, the reviews were very good. Don't know why he is no longer in the business. Probably a money issue. Mars was also not the easiest person to get along with from what I've been told. Even with the few conversations that I had with Mars, it showed me that he was very frustrated with the business end of touring and recording. :( Too bad, as he simply is one amazing player.

Yeah, he was one of my favorites as well. Wish I could have seen the jam with him and Nicko!! I had the honor of seeing them on the School of Hard Knocks tour back in 90-91 while working as a bouncer at Shades Bar in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jerry Riggs, which is another of my favorites was playing with the PTB at the time. Talk about LOUD! It was equally the best show I've seen of all time. It literally shook the plaster off the ceiling of the upstairs bar and the tin off the roof. I should know, I had to help repair the damage! Oh well, it was worth it! Had a chance to party with them a little after the show:)

Hey Ebrecht,

First off, welcome to the PTB site! Glad to have you aboard. Regarding the PT gig at the Bolin Fest, scroll down to last week's post to June 20th. Some of us have been discussing this gig and there is a link to the Bolin Fest that was posted by T. All the info you need will be there. The gig will be at the Surf Ballroom, which I'm sure you are familiar with as you are from Cedar Rapids. Nice venue with a cool history. Are you aware that Glenn Hughes will be playing that same Friday night with Pat? Like Randal, I'm bumming I can't make it. PT & Bolin are two of my top 5 guitarists and Hughes is one of my top 3 vocalists. Should be a magical evening....enjoy!
I have an acquaintance in Cedar Falls that I trade "live" soundboard recordings with that will be at that show. He's really stoked about that show as well as the Ted Nugent show that will be at the same venue sometime soon.

Again, welcome to the site. If you make the gig, we'll want a full review. Consider it your first "assignment"! LOL!

And as always...PTB is king!

Hey Piglet, if you hear let me know too? Or maybe I can check it out when I go on GrantQuest 2003 . . .

Ebrecht, welcome too. The Bolin show sounds fantastic. Lettuce know what you end up with . . . Cedar Rapids, eh? Just met a guy from Altoona on busien ss -- oddly enough, I've been there (hailing from San Diego at present by way of Portland and Seattle). Who knows -- there may eb a trip out that way one of these days. Unfortunately not for the TBolin fest.

Took the morning off and made an appointment with my DVD player...

I watched all of the new Led Zeppelin DVD.

First impression is this is one outstanding DVD.

But I can't believe that this would be the best of the rest of any and all video ever shot of these guys...

A few brief remarks if I may:

Memorable peformances:
1.Bonzo on the Danmarks Radio Show. Energetic! Truly a precussionary genius!!
2.Jimmy at Madison Square Garden - especially Since I've Been Loving You. Oh and special note for finishing Stairway with a broken string 8:30 into the song at Earl's Court!
3. Jonesy - Earls Court amazing acoustic performance! Gotta love that mandolin!!!
4. Robert Plant - Everytime this guys sings it's an outstanding performance. I always wonder at what point in his life did Robert realize that he could sing like that. Methinks he could possibly possess the ultimate rock and roll vox.

Overall production:
Very interesting use of bootleg video. And the Black and White television performances were a real treat. The quality of the video varied throughout the DVD with the New York stuff being the best.

There is no way that the Albert Hall show was only a 2 cam shoot. If it was then those two guys were hoofin' it all night long. I can't imagine how they got that many angles so quickly with just two cams!!! Kudos fellas!

If there was a low point in this DVD for me then it would be the Knebworth show... The band seemed a bit lackluster, except for Jimmy who was very animated, although he looked a bit road weary.

Final note:
On a final note whoever thought of lighting up Bonham with that rotating mutlicolored light wheel shoot have been shot! LOL!

MOST XLNT DVD!

On the EdTheEdge scale 1 to 10 (10 being best):

7

Led Zeppelin Rocks!

My Zep is FINALLY on it's way to me. Can't wait to see/hear it! hey Stalker, GREAT PICS!!! Man, you are the best!! How do you do that? I must just really suck at it, because none of pictures ever look that good. The ones of Rick and Eric especially are great! Keep them coming. You are the official-unofficial PTB photographer.

Rockpig - "Coast to Coast" Hughes/Thrall, "Beg, borrow or steal", "Muscle and Blood". P.S. on the event I am directing, the exceutive producer Tony siad that we do not imperatively know if there wil be a curfew or sound restriction. I missed that detail, but I am hopeful there will be no sound restrictions, but even that as so, both days shows end appx. 10:oo pm, unless the crowd, artists and executive producer warrant differently. At any rate, as PT says "We're Gonna Kick Your Ass". Rockpig - PT is King (I like your saying) - Later Blu

The Led Zeppelin DVD, yes, truly outstanding to finally get so much great footage! It's just a wonder to see, if you're even a casual Zep fan (or a fanatic like me!).

Ed, take a CLOSE look & listen to that Stairway solo, when Page breaks the string, he fixed up the audio, so that when you see him play the last lick of the solo down low on the neck (an octave lower than it normally would have been), you hear it played up high, where it's supposed to be! He probably took the lick from one of the other nights that were recorded & popped it in there. Sneaky bugger! There are quite a few patch other up's like that, but hell, I'm not complaining. He wanted it to sound it's best, and it does!

Cheers!

Ahhh...

I have a shortcut that goes right to messages and somehow bypasses the 'discus' frame so I wasn't seeing the menu.

thanks!

Hooked, I got it. I've had the cd since it came out. My version is on Episode records, though. I think the original is on Grand Slamm?

I remember a song of Pat’s that me and my brother blew a fuse on years ago but I can’t remember the name - I think it had “If I didn’t have bad luck I wouldn’t have any luck at all” in it. Does anybody know the song title, and maybe the album?

Thanks,
Chance
