I've been to the Catalyst and it's a very cool place. Very layed back. Santa Cruz is in a little world all its own - it's so.... hard to describe. Even other Californians from out of town get funny looks on their faces while looking around. UCSC voted to change the school mascot to the "banana slugs" several years ago. Guess what? They got the majority votes necessary and they became the UCSC Banana Slugs. Randy |

Randy: We live about 20 minutes from Santa Cruz (Los Gatos/San JOse Border) and they consider us the "Valley People" but we have a great time every time we are there! It is very much the kick back town, I went to high school in a very small country town (about 30-40 minutes away) and we would cut school and go to Santa Cruz, Rio Del Mar Beach! Many memories of Santa Cruz!! |

Pt at the Old Smokey Mtn., near the Hwy 17 entrance on Los Gatos Blvd. Wow. They never did quality national toruing acts before. I was raised in Los Gatos. The place was never big enough. Are you sure? They are upstairs. I don't think many bands the quality of PT would like to lug their gear up stairs. Do they have a quality PA, stage and lights now? Wow. Not sure about that. The Catalyst - I think holds a 1,000 maybe I will call them, but you see many of these clubs are being called on by Pat's Responsible Agents. They are Don Barnard and Steve Green I think does some bookings. Getting to Pat on his own is the way Pat can make more money and they way Texas Rich and I prefer. He allows direct bookings. He has on many ocasssions with me. We'll see though. If Mtn View's the old "One Step Beyond" is still alive maybe that will be the bay area place, then there is a 75 mile radius for bookings between clubs. Let's all party in Reno - that's my main thrust right now. - Talk to you - Blu |

Just for the record, number 1250 PIS/HITS CD made it safely across the water to the UK. All round great package but can somebody inform me of the HITS cover confusion? I always thought that the front cover had the PTB sat in their sun loungers, as shown on my vinyl copy of the LP(UK issue)and the original Japanese CD issue. The One Way release (and my copy from Ginbel) clearly has the photos the other way. Is this a UK/US issue difference? |

Hey cuttlefish66, The OneWay reissue is correct to the original American album. The Japanese disc (and apparently the UK album) are reversed. Don't know why and am not sure if it was intentional or not. At first, I thought the Japanese screwed up on the 1990 cd issue, but if you're telling me the UK vinyl from 1979 is that way also, then maybe it was intentional. A lot of times, the music industry will alter or completly change covers to better suite, what they perceive would be more appealing to the people of any given market...........Jees, there I go on a rant again. Sorry Sometimes I get carried away. What's you thoughts (sonically) on the first four Heat In The Street Songs compared to the last four songs (sides 1 and 2 of the album respectively). As I mentioned in an earlier post, My copy clearly exhibits drastic sonic differences, with the first four songs lacking high end clarity, while the last four are crystal clear. Ginbels version clearly whomps the OneWay version in this respect and is even better than the Japanese version because he got rid of the tape hiss |

Not that it matters, but are people saying that the front of the oneway release & the front of the US vinyl cover for HITS shows the band out of their loungers & partying with the policewomen, while the back is them ON the loungers chilling? |

Thanx for the compliment on the CDs Missing Mars. I had heard the one way versions we crappy before. I had hoped I heard it wrong or they were going to be different this time. On the artwork... The correct version is the LP. the Jap CD is backwards. Plus the logo is missing and is subsituted with some generic type. Plus normally the Japs screw up the lyrics here and there. It's nice for Pat that the music is getting out there, but kinda cheesy to put two on one CD..I think. I'd rather see individual releases with full blown liner notes and extras. Just my two cents. |

O.K. the original Japanese LP of HIS is printed " copyright from Polydor U.K. ltd" on back cover. I have the Dutch pressing (gatefold) of "HIS". As somebody mentioned it, the covers are same as the Japanese and also appears copyright mark of Polydor U.K. ltd on back cover. The U.K. pressing must be the same. I also have the original U.S. pressing of HIS, but that words are not printed. I guess that Polydor U.K. owned the original master tape / artwork and Polydor U.S.changed or reversed the covers to give more impression to buyers in the U.S. I may be wrong... You can still say that Polydor Holland, Japan and U.K. reserved covers (haha). Seeing artworks of PIS" and "HIS albums, I thought that the beginning of a story comes on front and the end of a story comes on back cover. For me, it's not a big issue to enjoy the music and it's nice to have two diff. covers. Also, I can tell you a few about the original Japanese LPs. The Japanese original PIS LP has a 4 page booklet printed 6 b/w photos of PT. Sadly, 5 of the 6 photos were removed when it was reissued on CD in Japan. I have never seen 3 of them anywhere. Also, the Japanese Makin Magic LP inserts a 8 page booklet incl. sheet music of Rock & Roll Susie / You Don't Love Me. And, the Japanese "Hot Shot" LP has glossy covers and the song list on back cover is not in a pink & white square. Just printed songs around top of a tree. As some of you know, all the Japanese LPs have title strips on left. Ginbel, I sent you the money order for the DVDs. Does the San Diego DVD have artwork? Can't wait to watch them. |

I emailed Eric and Rick and asked them to call you since its "kinda" like a farewell show. Rick is supposed to call me this weekend. We talked over a month ago and "he" said he can't wait to see the DVD. Any way, maybe you and the B in PTB can get this thing moving. Are we gonna have to wait 5-10 years for this show like the rest?? Call me this weekend Rich, I'll tell ya what Rick says. Frustrated PTB Fan!!! |

Bruce is sending me a copy of the DAT so I do not have to wait for Wishbox(or anyone else) to be finished with it. Just had to grease the wheels a little...LOL! Maybe Eric and Rick can speed this up a bit. Trying to get a BUNCH of DVDs produced for Erics' farewell concert! This will take some time and the show is March 5th. So I am praying the tape gods smile kindly on me and get the materials to me very soon. Kind of a huge shame if we were unable to provide 2 of the 3 musicians in the band their just dues while we still can. It would think it would leave Eric with a big warm fuzzy! I think that is the VERY LEAST he deserves after all he has done for the band... ya' know? |

Hey Missingmars, back to the HITS cover issue, I've lived with the UK & Japan covers for as long as I've been listening to PT (23 years!!!) and find it difficult to adjust to the US version. It just seems a more logical order to me (a bit like Putting It Straight cover) where the front photo preceeds the back photo. Not that it matters of course, I'll just have to track down a good US vinyl copy for the collection! |

I have two origial US vinyl copies of the 1977 release "Puttin It Straight" and yes the guys were all wearing white, like a single tone color image on the inside sleeve. Nicko's outfit is a bit "pimpish", but I think that's the way those Canadians dressed for style in back then. I graduated that year. I also have every vinyl in top "mint" condition in thick plastic sleeves (sorry not for sale) that's Rich's department. After the smoke clears on these videos I would like the one everyone thinks is the best. Also, is that Doc McGee as the Producer "old man" on the Puttin It Straight vinyl cover? I never knew Doc, but I know that he helped finance PT in the early days. Enter Pat's first Dog - Gimble McGee. - Love to hear these PT stories - Take care - Blu |

Rockpig!
| Posted on Monday, February 17, 2003 - 06:16 pm: | |
The guy on the cover of PIS is definitely not Doc McGhee. I don't believe Doc came into the picture until around the end of Radio Active. He was a big part of Black Pearl, I do know for sure. My only gripe is...Doc did HUGE things for the careers of Motley Crue and Bon Jovi. Man...if he could turn those goobers into platinum success, it's a damn shame it didn't happen to our fella Pat. I think a big part of the reason is because during that Black Pearl era Doc was busted smuggling a large amount of weed, and it sorta derailed Doc for a while. Remember that big anti-drug concert that was held in Russia back in the mid to late 80's that included Skid Row, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, and a few others? That was part of Doc's sentence...to provide some sort of "anti-drug" agenda. And to imagine it was done with Motley Crue in tow? Now THAT'S a riot! Anyway, too bad that Doc wasn't able to pull a golden egg with Pat instead of the other guys! Man....the DVD scenario is gettin' a bit complicated! It's like that Abbott & Costello routine....Who's on first??? What????? Folks will just have to be patient, I guess. Regarding the insert for the Japanese LP of PIS. I have this copy and if any of you guitar players would like copies of the sheet music, let me know. Keep in mind that it is standard notation, and NOT tablature! So you gotta read music to make sense of it. But if you want it, I can help! Hey Takashi, are you Tirocks? And are you in Japan? I'm looking for a Japanese connection for a trading circle that I'm in. You interested? Drop a line if you are! And as always....PTB is KING! |

Hey cuttlefish66, Someone had that gatefold Heat In The Street on EBay last week (see my previous post on this) and I asked here on the message board if it was legit or not! Nobody seemed to know as I did not get a reply. I'd love to get my hands on it. The bidding started at only $4.99. Crimony!!! I did notice that the gatefold logo and front & rear picture order was just like the Japanese cd and you're right, the pictures do follow a more logical time line on the Japanese, UK, Holland pressings Anybody know anything about the whereabouts of that gatefold Heat In The Street, please post here. Cuttlefish66, if you locate an American copy, make sure it has the original cardstock (and sometimes glossy paper) inner sleeve. It has the same printout as the inside of the gatefold. Makin' Magic and Putting It Straight also had inner sleeves with picturs and lyrics (Putting It Straight) and stuff. No, I don't know who the old dude is on Putting It Straight cover, but I'd like to. I'd also like to hear Pat's recollection of that photo shoot. |

Here's a suggestion to anyone ancy for the PTB NYE DVD: Place an order for the other DVDs that the Ginbels are offering. At last count there's at least 4 currently available. I've just ordered 3 of them and can't wait What's that, you have all of the currently available DVDs? Well then, may I suggest some PT CDs from the Ginbels?? They've got 10 of them! Best part of all of these CDs and DVDs (besides the fact that they exist) is that all proceeds go to PTB!!! What, you have all of the above mentioned DVDs and CDs? Then you truly are a fan and it looks like you'll be waiting a bit (only a bit) for PTB NYE DVD (I just love that title......all initials) Not to mention the next NEW PT CD...........which we're all waiting for To hell with the labels. Since we only take money orders now it's been cheaper to for them to send payments once not twice, since they are already paying for a CD or DVD. Not my idea, just what people are doing. I am going to have to send their money back though if I do not have the materials soon. Any word Ed? I'll glady pay you double what ever it costs for the shipping I just need the stuff soon. Hey MissingMars, I have an autographed copy of the HITS gatefold that you're inquiring about. Here's a quick description....Pale blue border around the outer perimeter edges (both front & back). Pat Travers in yellow block letters with a blue & gray offset HITS block letters. The band is reclining on the front, PT is handcuffed on the back. Small logo in the upper left hand corner on the back says "Via Sound Production". Upper right hand corner has the Polydork logo with "Polydor Deluxe", and under that is what looks like limited edition numbers. Mine reads 2383 / 516 embossed/imprinted into the jacket in gold letters. However, I CAN NOT confirm that these are "limited editions". I don't want to start any false rumors! This is just an assumption from the looks of things. If anybody has any additional info regarding this, pass it on. Inside the gatefold is a color picture of the band on a dock...both Pats seated, Mars & Tommy standing behind them. This is where Pat signed the jacket for me. The other side of the inside gatefold has in big pale yellow letters offset with the pale blue "Pat Travers". Under that are the credits along the left half of the page. On the right, across from the credits, is a photo at a 45 degree angle in black & white of the same picture from the back, only it's cropped down to include only Pat handcuffed, Pat Thrall pouring the beer over the female cop's head, and the female cop. Side note...the beer bottle looks to be a Lowenbrau! LOL! Across the bottom is HITS in offset blocks lettering in blue & gray. The LP protective jacket is plain. And the vinyl is mint! Of interesting note...At the bottom of the back cover it says "Printed in the Netherlands". On the LP itself it says "Made in Holland". At the bottom of the credits inside the gatefold it says "Record manufactured and distributed in the United Kingdom by Polydor Limited, 17-19 Strattford Place, London WIN OBL." Copyright & publishing rights indicate 1978 Polydor LTD. U.K. It is a legit release. Hope this answers your questions! The U.K. also released the first 10,000 copies of "Live Go For What You Know" on red vinyl. You might want to search that out. I've seen it on Ebay several times. For a really rare item, search out the German promo 45 of "Only Man" backed with either "Chevrolet" or "Via Veneto" (I can't remember which. It's late and it's packed away, but I'll track it down later if you're interested in the info). When Pat signed that for me his comment at the time was "I haven't seen this before". I couldn't believe it! I happened to be in Germany just after "School Of Hard Knocks" came out, and snagged both the 45 single and the full LP on German release. On the 45 it has a short career description on the liner notes (in German, of course) and the hilarious thing is it says Pat "plays like Ted Nugent & sings like Bruce Springsteen"!!????!!?? Where the hell THAT came from is anyone's guess! LOL! It's a cool item, and maybe Rod from Germany can track a copy down for you? Happy hunting! And as always....PTB is KING! |

UMMM Lowenbrau: Hey Rockpigus, I was always curious what happen to Pat & The Doc. It looks like the relationship only lasted through Black Pearl as Hot Shot was a different management team again, Pat Armstrong. I rememeber the Doc McGhee project it was around the "School oh Hard Knocks" era. I clearly rememeber thinking that this would have been a great opportunity to bring P.T. back to minds of the Rock n Roll masses. Also interesting around this time 90-91; was an ad in the Toronto Sun promoting a P.T. show, that stated "Pat Travers now on Geffen ". I wonder what happen ? Ed - I'm still waiting for some help on the Blue Oyster Cult thing. |

After Pat had gotten things back on track around '92 I saw the band in Raleigh, NC. I spoke with Mars after the gig and he told me that it was going to be Elektra Records. I also remember an article (maybe posted on this site?) that referenced that as well. I wonder just how many things Polydor has sabotaged for Pat since they parted ways. I imagine they've cost him dearly. |

Wow, go away for the long weekend, and come back to a gazillion posts! That's some dedicated fans here, all right! Regarding the Heat cover, I always thought the US version seemed backwards, as the story seems to begin with the guys lounging in the sun, and ends with the cops coming (& the guys pouring the beer on one, and hitting on the blonde chick cop!). Then when I first saw an import, with the pictures reversed, I figured the US record co probably wanted the cover to be more visually exciting, so decided to print 'em up backwards. That's my guess as to what happened, anyway... Rich, are you not taking PayPal any longer? I still need to get the Rockpalast DVD (& now San Diego too!). I'll email ya. Cheers all! Steve Z |

When Pat stormed the Polydor London studio, he blasted right past reception and straight into the producer's office with his tapes and talked the old guy into the auditon (the guy on PIS), he had already mixed alot of what would be PIS and Makin Magic, but they elected to cut a lighter first Cd with covers Mabeline and Hot Rod Lincoln. At least that's what I heard back then. This is when Makes No Difference began it's mega flight as Pat's closer at all shows. A F?&%??G hot tune - one of my faves of all time. Magnolia is on there and one of my all time faves. I have the album and it still sounds better than Rich's copy I bought. Just not enough volume for me a little muffled, but still outstanding for a recording straight from LP. Of course on all of my LP's I recorded it onto cassette back then and put the LP in plastic protectors and played only the tapes. Now I can pull the LP's out one more time and burn a CD. No scratches or hisses. TraversBabeFan - Smokey Mountain - your right that's what I was thinking about. Can you find out who specializes in the classic rockers and holds at least 1,000-1,500 capacity range. It would help me out before I begin major research of the clubs still around in the Bay area. Texas Rich - No Package after two weeks? Rockpig - change your name to rockfontofknowledge Where the heck is Dwarff? Randall, tried calling your cell - disconnected Ginbel, Anysley Dunbar on drums is as good as any regular PTB member - heck he's toured with PT as much as anyone. I believe Anysley is the "Greatest Rock N Roll Drummer of All Times". Check out Journey's first three albums, the green album, Next and Look into the Future, he's absolutely amazing. Also check Frank Zappa - Anysley will blow your mind. Anysley is now a stable drummer for Varney's Blues Bureau International , AKA Shrapnell Records in San Francisco. You can call Tim up there and get any CD you want for $7.00, but you need to buy a handful so there's no shipping charge. - I'm out - Blu |

You know some things are just better off not being said.... cause they agitate things. Then these things tend to deteriorate into something that it isn't. Kinda like being dragged down to a level where ya don't wanna be. A nasty downward spiral that can never be corrected. With that said, you guys leave me no choice but to say something: In regards to the NYE tapes. I've been bashed around enough about them and Rich's minion's aren't helping one bit. I would like to suggest that they back off. The tapes will be sent out as promised this week and not because I am being pressured to do so. It has been suggested that I am holding out for money or whatever. Have I ever mentioned money???? I would never ever take any money from any of you and least of all the PTB. Very few people here know what the real deal is. So I would appreciate if you guys would stop piling on. Have I ever been anything but cooperative? Running this site alone costs me tons of time, effort, grief and yes MONEY. Now I have to deal with all this BS about the NYE tapes. As you all know there is another project going on as far as the NYE tapes go. I haven't heard complaint one out of that camp. They are waiting patiently for everything that I promised them as should you guys. The NoCal team trust me to get them their stuff when I promised them I would... and I will. And NO I am not partial to any one project - I am trying to retain my objectivity I really and truly am. I do want to see two versions of NYE come out on DVD.... I really do!!! BTW - I got a sampling of the infamous NYE DAT this morning - Crash & Burn sounds freakin' awesome! Also - New shows posted!!!!!!

You would get 2 updates per year, whether you wanted them or not!!! Hey Ed! I don't know what kind of flak your getting (nor do I want to know! wink-wink!) but you shouldn't be getting any! I think most of us know that you are not in this for any personal gain, other than the occasional advance copy cd, back-stage-access, hanging out with Pat and The Band, etc, etc.!! As if any of that weren't enough! Seriously Ed...Thanks for everything! EVERYTHING!! Later...Jim ED ROCKS!! |

Ed, "minion" remark accepted. Just anxious....mostly cuz I was there w/ you and selfishly want the DVD in my hands!!! I don't accuse of a "money" reason....I just know Rich-n-nancy, and have all their stuff and love it! For God's sake...if anyone woulda told me 5-6 years ago I would be able to purchase and own all this PTB stuff, I'da said "Bullpoop!" Mostly cuz it just wasn't there!!! Now w/ the Ginbels putting out all this QUALITY PTB stuff, seeing Eric's last show with ya'll, I was pushing the envelope w/ wanting this show. NO HARM MEANT, I was just emailing Rich everyday and sent him money for a pre-purchase. Thinking all of this was "magically" done. This all wasn't meant to take the wind out of your sails....just show the enthusiasm for more PTB stuff. Can't wait for the finished product!! Thanx! g |

Hey Ed, No complaints from me (or anybody else, I think). As you once told me off of this message board, the PTB fans sometimes circle the wagon. It's hard not to inject your own imagined "tone" into the posts and e-mails that are coming from others, but as I've learned in my business career, it's best to read them in a monotone voice first, and then build from there. That's good advice not only for the reader, but the writer as well. Now I want you to read this with no tone intended: "I can't wait for PTB NYE DVD (both of them)" ps -thanks for all you do for PTB and the PTB fans. Words can't express this I know, but you are an invaluable asset to all things PTB |

Hey Hammerheads, I need your help on some PT history. The magazines articles on the website recant Pat's bankruptcy as being between the release of Black Pearl and Hot Shot. If memory serves me correctly (LOL), I thought Black Pearl was the sort of Phoenix rising out of the ashes for Pat. On the back of Black Pearl, he thanks his "attorneys who made it all possible". Management is Doc "Dr. Doom" McGhee. I also remember reading in Circus magazine way back in the early 80's that it was oil man Doc McGhee who bailed him out. That Polydor originally rejected Radioactive and Pat had to re-record the whole project. Back then, Polydor was giving him $250,000.00 to record and tour an album, but due to recording the album twice, he had no budget to tour. The article also quoted someone close to all this as saying that "Pat has a champange taste, but a beer pocket. He rented the best lights and sound (Tasco and Showco???). I believe that I still have the article somewhere. I have to dig it up and maybe Ed can put it in the magazine section of the website. Did Pat file bankruptcy twice? Hammerheads Help!!! |

I kinda remember that too. I remember that an article said after Pat was done w/the Black Pearl tour, he was looking at a $285,000 debt and still had bills to pay. Didn't he try and buy alot of the equipment he toured with? I also remember he was resentful of the record company.....damn that was along time ago. |

Hi, Pat was extremely uncomfortable in 1995 talking about the 1981 era of his career. At that time the stations in Chicago were talking quite abit about his financial problems after the Rainbow, Pat Travers tour. Ritchie was also a subject he was not enthused in discussing. The 30 times I have seen him since 1979, the 1981 shows I would see him offstage, he did not seem to be a happy camper, but pleasant compared to my runins with Mr. Blackmore! London |

Remember what we did and what I gave you later? Also do you REALIZE THAT I HAVE NOT ASKED YOU OR COMMENTED ABOUT THIS NYE thing once? I know what a drag it must be for you to listen to the same questions from Hammerheads over and over and over. Can you all just leave Ed ALONE?- It's a don't call him he'll call you sort of thing. Just knock it off. When it's done it's done. Ginbel and Ed will let you know - now please everyone just go listen to a PT selection and layoff Ed for God's sake - Blu Your Welcome Ed! |

It seems to me the record companies took full advantage of their young protegies living the rock and roll life. No excuses here just an observation. I think musicians in general now are more business oriented (read more sober) and less taken for a ride. What can you do? It's all water under the bridge now. Mike Varney takes good care of Pat and it seems to me he is really looking out for him even in a personal manner. Never met him, but seems very likable from what I have heard. Glad to see Pat working with quality individuals again! Mike also has the clout to properly distribute the work. Double blessing for Pat. We all need quality people in our lives looking out for our best interests. I thing everyone here has that in their heart and wants what is best for the band. Peace out. Rich |

Yo Bluhawley, I tried to reach you via e-mail in regards to the upcoming PT gig in Reno. No luck with the e-mail thing, so`s I figger I`ll try it this way. When and where is the Reno show gonna be? I know an old drummer,Chuck Ruff, that lives in Reno that worked with PT many moons ago and I`m sure Chuck would like to drop by and say 'Hi!". Chuck also worked with Edgar and Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, Sammy Hagar and I believe also Ronnie Montrose. Chuck has settled in Reno and he has a local band there. Anyways, email me at inboard@earthlink.net or just post the info here. Bummer thing is I can`t catch the Eric, Rick, and "whats-his-name" gig March 5th in New Smyrna. New Smyrna is about a 5 hour drive fo me, but it`s on a Wednesday and I can`t get the time off. I now return you to your regularly scheduled chaos. S'later, John "semi-retired PTB stalker" Howe |

MissingMars-I recall the article you are talking about. The "he (PT) has a champagne taste and a beer pocket" quote was from none other than David Hemmings, Pat's former manager. They apparently had an ugly breakup, and I believe Hemmings committed suicide a couple of years after the hit the fan. I also remember an article from the Black Pearl/Hot Shot era that stated that Polydor and Pat had reached a new agreement paying Pat $1 million per record. I'm not sure if that included touring budget, studio expenses, band salaries, or what. There were no other details except the $1 million per record. That's still pretty impressive, but that deal obviously got torn up pretty quickly. |

PT Trivia-how many of you know that the cover for "Blues Tracks" released in 1992 was from a 1984 magazine article promoting the release of "Hot Shot" and the addition of Riggs, Dunaway, and Marchino to the band? This is the picture of Pat wearing a black leather jacket and playing guitar while seated on some railroad tracks. The title of the article was "Pat Travers: Back On The Streets" and I believe it was from Guitar Player. |

Hey Blur, I'll believe it when I see that 1984 magazine article you're talking about. The Blues Tracks cover may have been inspired by a previous photo shoot, but there's no way that this is Pat from 1984. Any other hammerheads wanna chime in on this one? Ed, Rich......... |

If it's a different photo shoot then it's an identical photo in every way. FWIW-PT's appearance from 1984-1992 changed very little. I went from 1987-1992 without seeing PT. I was amazed how young he still looked. Pat has aged quite well over the years and to this day looks a lot younger than his age. |

Then I stand corrected. I used to have the article in question but don't any longer so I couldn't really compare it even back in '92. I can't understand the need to redo the photo shoot unless they didn't have access to the original negatives, which could very well have been the case. So, I'll rephrase my PT trivia. Anybody know that the INSPIRATION for the cover of "Blues Tracks" was from a 1984 magazine article? |

Rich, I know Mike Varney personally and he is a very nice man. He is actually a guitar guru himself. You know that tune "Little Southern Bell" off Blues Magnet? That's Varney's voice on the intro and he plays some fills on the CD. One thing though -- Varney does not promote his albums. He cuts his little deals and makes an alloted amount of CD's for distribution, but he has never promoted a CD like a real label. This is a fact. PTB Stalker - I got your email, but the dates with Robin haven't been nailed down yet. He's thinkin about when he wants to do the Reno gig. Once the Headliner is signed I will offer Pat. Montrose has agreed, but knows we are waiting on Robin. Jeff Martin ( Varney stable drummer), drummed for Racer X, Badlands, Varney's Blindside Blues Band and recently laid down all vocals and drums for Schenkers next three albums (already completed, but only one releasing) will drum for Pat in Reno. Jeff just came in a close second to Tommy Aldridge in the Whitesnake tryouts, so I heard from Mario - Whitesnake's bass player. Another note on Varney is that I have paid him to play second lead with Blindside Blues Band and a group we called D.V.O.C. (Dunbar, Varney, Onesko and Chole. Chole is a Varney pal and Michael Onesko IS THE BLINDSIDE BLUES BAND. You ought to get that first album. If you don't have it, I have three sealed copies of the first three Blindside releases on Varney's label - Rich they rock like heck. Wanna trade for that PT solo. I'll trade you three for one? - Talk to me - Blu |

I watched two Deep Purple vids recently. The first one was Cal Jam '74. An awesome show with DP in its finest form. Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals! After trashing no less than three strats in a matter of about ten minutes, Ritchie is stomping around behind the amp stack looking for another one. I couldn't believe it. I can just see the exchange... Roadie: "Another one??! You've already trashed three!" Ritchie: "Only three?? Hell, if I don't trash at least four, I can't sleep at night." And then I watched the "Making Of Machine Head" video. Ritchie seemed so damned normal in that video. How can a seemingly normal person destroy so many beautiful guitars? Just think how many vintage Strats would still be around today if it wasn't for that guy. Randy |

About ten years ago, Mike Varney was putting out these really incredible CDs of compilations of some really awesome, but for the most part unknown, guitarists. They were all right at 74 minutes and he put out four altogether. I signed up to receive all four of them and it was super cheap (like $2-3 for each CD - which was outrageously cheap back in the days before consumer burners). I was having a problem with getting one of the CDs, so I called the number listed on one of the CD jackets. Low and behold Mike answers the phone. I ended up talking with him for over an hour about several of the guitarists featured on the CDs. These guys were unknowns, and this was before the internet, so you couldn't find any information about them elsewhere. He's a very cool person, indeed. Randy |

Ha ha, Randy, that's why, when I used to play guitar in a Deep Purple tribute band called Fireball, my nickname was Bitchie Rackmore! We showed a flyer with that name on it once to Joe Lynn Turner, and he cracked up, and said, "Man, that's PERFECT!" Saw that Rainbow/PT tour at the San Diego Sports Arena. Not one of Pat's best; his pedalboard crapped out during the first song, and he had to take a 5 minute break while a tech came out & fixed it! The crowd was not kind during the wait! He was much better later that summer, when I saw him at the Oakland Stadium Day on the Green. Cheers! Steve Z |

Randy: I'd be very interested to hear the Shrapnel compilations if there's any way to arrange it. I discovered the label subscribing to "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" in the mid-80's and discovered some of my all-time favorite guitar music there. Marty Friedman (WAY before Megadeth), Jason Becker (before DLR and LGD), Joey Tafolla, and Tony MacAlpine, to name a few of the brighter lights. Mike Varney appears to have had very similar taste to me around that era, and those are still some of my favorite CDs. Drop me an email at CARLJ@AOL.COM and let's talk? BLINDSIDE BLUES BAND - WOW, WOW. Hey Andy you tell em'. Michael Onesko is now signed with Comet Records, based out of Italy. Michael lives in Cleveland, Ohio, but is talking about moving back to Tahoe. This is our home. While he still does his Blindside shows on ocassion, his new band is called Michael Onesko's Guitar Army - really heavy guitars. I will be running Blindside around this spring-summer. Anyone you know who would pick them up in the bay area- Sacto etc? $1,000/obo a night for a 120 minute showfest with a 4-piece band. The stage presence of this band is as great as any of the big bad bands out there. Andy you've seen em' - you know. I love the three Blindside CD's The First One entitled Blindside, The second Blindsided and the third Messenger of the Blues are all rockers. The first is my fave. Did you know Pat and Onesko did a collaborative tune on a "best of" hits album on Shrapnel. The tune was - "Sunshine of my Life" by Cream. They both vocal and rip guitars. For those of you who haven't met Mike Varney - he's about 5'8", 170lbs., doesn't wear hair and has the neatest personality. Mike is a genuine dude and really got a kick out of being paid for his services on a gig. He's a guru and can really rip on the guitar that's why he has such a love for obscure excellent guitar players. Pat is the most well known in his arsenal. - I can't wait to get the Anysley report on the new Cd they are cutting in Vegas. Trower is suppose to let me know in the next couple of days - then I need to make it work for Pat. Montrose is ready already. You can email ronnie personally at ronnie@ronnieland.com - he's so cool he responds to almost everyone. - Thanks for the positive note Shiva - Talk to you all later - I'm flying to meet Les Dudek about a new project on Geosynchronous Records. - I'm out Blu P.S. Texas Rick - No Package yet - going on three weeks. I wanted to wear that shirt around Dudek and make him hungry for his own tour. Please reply ConcertServices@aol.com |

Hi! I need to quit with the exclamation points. Elaine Benes got in trouble for that, by her boss. I still just have the 5 pictures4x6,s from the last show in 1995. They are very clear, and yes I was not happy that night, with Don there, and 18 exposures on my camera, 5 min. before showtime, and my exwife, forgetting the other roll. Don let me write a check for the shirts that night, since all we had was 15.00, forgot the bank that day. That 1981 show was excellant in Chicago, great Sandy Genaro drum solo also. I love drum solos. Ritchie, was not going to do an encore, the lights went on half the stadium cleared, it was pouring outside, and 15 minutes later, Rainbow came back on! Anyone at that show, in Chitown, 1981 Amphitheater? Take Care, Scott London |

Ed, if you're playing Boulder Creek April 12, where are you coming from April 11? Also, why don't you see if PT would like to play Reno April 18, 19 or 11? It's a direct routing. Easter with PT. I'll meanwhile see if Montrose can support PT. Call me and I'll give you my offer - a darn good one. This way PT won't have to pay that 15% booking fee for something I'll do for free - and I will be buying the show. Tell him 60,000 watts of power and 100' state of the art stage. - Also, Pam Farris wants to do a live interview with PT in studio day of at KOZZ. Pat knows her, he's hot tubbed with her, so she says (lol)Okay - Blu ConcertServices@aol.com |

Zep again, if Montrose is unavailable for this special show, would you be interested in supporting PT in Reno? If no to all of the above, I'll stick with my July-Aug RT/PT/RM gig. - Rock out - Blu |

Weird around here lately. I don't know all the dirty details about what's been going down here these last few days, nor do I care to find out, but in perspective to what happened last night at the Great White nightclub show in Rhode Island & the pending war with Iraq and terrorism....draw your own conclusions. The threat of war is expectedly disturbing to me, and I'm sure most of you, but the Great White tragedy hits real close too. This was only a 300 capacity club, and 90+ people died? Including possibly a band member? (guitarist Ty Longley). And the club was not oversold or overcrowded! It could have been a PT show (although Pat doesn't need the pyro to "spark" a show!). That wigs me out, because I've basically LIVED in clubs like this for the better part of my life (as well as have several other regulars here at the site). Let's drop the dark weirdness of late. Let's get back to what matters here, and that's what's best for the PTB movement. Without them, the PTB, it's all moot around here. All for naught. We wouldn't be here, we wouldn't be chatting, we wouldn't be trading music amongst ourselves, and we wouldn't be hooking up and becoming friends at the various shows around the country. I've made some kick ass friends through this place! We'd all still be going about our lives not knowing one another like we do, and we'd all still be playing our worn out cassettes & vinyl or playing what little PT was available on CD at the time. Video? Yeah, right! You'd maybe have "Just Another Killer Day" on VHS or laser disc (ha!) or maybe some B grade bootleg video or a 5th generation copy of something from long ago that really was unique, but wasn't watchable because of the quality. Think about what's available to us PT fans now in comparison to what our choices were even as little as 2 years ago. That stuff didn't just drop out of the sky, and it certainly didn't have major label financial support (Polydork!) to get it off the ground and enabling it's success in getting that product to YOU (and we ALL have some of that product!). On the flip side, alot of the product that was eventually made available to the PT faithful (God bless us all...we rock!) came through the courtesy of the fans that had video'd or taped the rare item that needed a little bit of professional attention to make it worthwhile to watch or listen to. Only one person around here other than me has any idea what I've contributed to one of the DVD's that a lot of you own. There's no credit, my name's not listed anywhere, but you guys are enjoying something very unique that took me a fair chunk of change and years to accumulate. And you can enjoy it at the push of a button thanks to me and somebody else that had the heart and skills to put together the package. And you know what? It happened because 2 people got along, had a common goal and had something they wanted to share with their friends and help out a very cool band at the same time. Am I bitter or upset about not being credited for my contribution? Nope, actually I think it's kinda cool this way. It's enough to know that what they're seeing is putting a smile on their face! That's enough for me! Besides, I now have several PT items I previously didn't have thanks to something that somebody else here provided for the rest of us to enjoy. Karma at work! My point is it's all a collective effort here folks. There's no want or need for greed, miscommunication and petty rivalry here. It's chill pill time. Opinions are one thing, but arguments are unwarranted. Put it into perspective and let's get back to the good vibe of the music. THAT'S the bottom line...the music! We all have enough tension in the real world that we don't have room in it for our "playroom" here! Sorry for the rambling, but it's gotten crazy here, and not much fun. I'm just trying to bring it back home. My most heartfelt condolences to Great White, their fanbase and those who lost friends, family members or someone close to them in that tragedy. And a big hug and a "Hell Yeah!" high-five to our troops who are putting their ass on the line for the ultimate cause. A big cold brew is waitin' for you when you get back home....We'll have the PTB crankin' for ya....... Peace.......and as always....PTB is KING! |

You know that you are always welcome to camp at my place if you would like! I'm working on Daryl, and am inclined to agree with Ed. You can bet I will be in Sac at that time. Boulder Creek is not far from Santa Clara I think, the map I was looking at isn't very discriptive, but it is somewhere around about there. In the range of a two hour drive, You are welcome to come into sac and cruise with me (us) if you like. Wow Pat must really like us here in Nor Cal! Glad your plan on coming up here Ed. Need I ask if Scott and Jo will be going? Ok well I did it.... Tony: It seems to be that you know my sister pretty good, Arleene? We are going out tonight to see a friends band at the 5th Quarter in San Jose and then a Led Zep (Steve have you heard of these guys?) tribute band called "Heartbeats" playing at a club called CJ's. We are so looking forward to the PT gigs here in No. Calif!!!!!!! Time to celebrate the 40th that month and Ed I hope you are right, that 40 isn't that bad!!! Hot Damn! Hope to meet a lot of you at these gigs! Blu, husband and his buddies are getting alist for me (for you) regarding some of the local clubs in the Santa Clara County that can hold the 1,000-1,500! His bass player, Joe Birtola, the one who got the job with Chris VanDahl (ex LA Guns Singer) has been practicing every night with this band and he has reported it has been an awesome experience and can't wait to get out in the circuit! |

Eric ia way more a MONSTER behind the drums, but Shaun is super technical! And if ya close yer eyes....Rick/Dave/....Dave/Rick...both are tremendous bass players!! I think the band you were thinking of that opened for PT at the Bone Bash was called Heartbreaker, a Zep tribute. Were they good, I only got to see Pat's set and after ended up back outside in the parking lot drinking beer. I grew up in Daly City and it was like a flashback to go to a show at the Cow Palace again. Damn near everyone I ever knew showed up for the concert. It was also the first venue in which I saw Pat, in '78, opening for Rush. I had never even heard of either band and I was instantly hooked to both for goin' on 25 years now. It brought back great memories. |

Wow...lots going on to read, lots I couldn't, and much to say... I just spent a few days in sunny Orlando, FL, and was fortunate enough to see both Eric and Rick performing while I was down there. As usual, they were gracious and friendly and it was great to see them both! Eric's new band, Curb 60, is a GREAT band playing up-to-date rock and he fits perfectly. Got to meet his sister and some of his friends and had a great time, though I was hoping to get some "hang time" with him that didn't happen. If there is any justice, this band will be on national radio pretty soon, they are awesome! You can get their CD online at curb60.com and I bought one at the show, it's really good! I also had the opportunity to see Rick play with his new band, 24-7, and they are excellent as well. A nice collection of covers very tightly performed by a band that has hardly had time to gel. Rick, even fighting a cold, is a tremendously talented musician (like that's news to anyone here LOL) and added great depth to some of the more typical "bar band" songs I've heard(and played myself) over and over. I also had the good fortune to chat with the very lovely Mrs. Monica Travers for a little while as well, she is charming! Was a fun time! Rich...no, Eric wasn't playing locally, I had to go to Orlando to see him....it was well worth the trip though. Still hoping to hook up when Pat plays Jaxx next month. Keep in touch! Stratman, I either inadvertently deleted or never received any email from you. Please resend. It's C A R L J @ AOL.COM. Look forward to hearing from you! gREG, Randal, Cindy, Bette, Ed, Darryl, and all the other PT fans...hope you all are doing well and we can get together again sometime soon! Carl |

I went to see Rush later at the Cow Palace, in '79, with 38 Special opening. Have kicked myself many times for missing that one that you saw! One of the best PT shows I ever saw was the Crash & Burn tour, in 1980. Pat headlined at the Oakland Arena (Henry J Kaiser), with a VERY young Def Leppard opening. The PT Band was totally ON FIRE that night! The next night they played the Warfield in San Francisco, which was broadcast live on the radio. I think they partied too much after the Oakland show, because that one was not nearly as good! ;-) Cheers! Steve Z |

Brian, now it's my turn to be envious. I was at that Warfield show, front row up in the balcony. It was a bit loose but I enjoyed it just the same. Wish I went to the Oakland show though but that would've been the 3rd show that week because Ted Nugent and the Scorpions (their first tour in the States) was either a couple days before or after that. I had my buddy's Mom tape the show off the radio for me (she was a great Mom to all us neighborhood kids). The tape no longer is around but I got a CD from someone in here last year. It's still fun to listen to even though it's not the tightest performance. It does have it's bright spots like Tommy's solo in Hammerhead, Mars' solo on Statesboro Blues and to hear The Big Event live is still cool. I just wish the CD I got had the opening song, Rock and Roll Susie, for some reason it isn't on there. Oh well, I'll just be happy with the fact that i was there. |

1977 - The Santa Monica Civic. Makin Magic Tour. Pat was wearing Green Cordouroy Pants and Tan cowboy boots. He tippy toed out on stage left and stage right on the very edge of the stage wrap and it was sooo cool. There wasn't much room for him to get out to the ends of the stage, and I thought he might fall, it was such narrow quarters, but he did it- What a showman!!! He was whaling that Les Paul and Makin Magin sounded exactly light the LP release. The crowd was 3,000 + and stood in line for this (my favorite) guitar player of all times. Yes - of all times. |

Good Morning All, it is a sad day in the neighborhood, childhood icon! On another note, the "Metro" newspaper in this area that lists concerts, clubs, movies, etc... Brookdale Lodge is already advertising Pat playing in April, and from what I am told tickets are already being sold at the Kingshead for Pat in April. Sounds like the shows are going to have a great outcome!! |

Regarding Randy's post on Monday from the Guitar Player Forum: Randy thanks. I love that kind of breakdown of the music. I went back and followed through the example CD times and got something new out of these songs. In 'Killer Instinct' the reviewer states: From 2:38 - 2:43, we hear one of Travers' trademarks kick in - the MXR Blue Box, which was a combination octave doubler and distortion box, run through a flanger. It's a very unique sound (probably most familiar from Jimmy Page's solo on Fool in the Rain). I believe there is a tune on 'Go For What You Know' that uses this (I forgot which one). I just picked up PT's "Lookin' Up". I'm listening to "Too Much (Is Never Enough)" and the solo in this is using the same effect. And there maybe other PT tunes that use as well. I say this to say that there is always something new and interesting to enjoy. Fun stuff. Gary |

Quote:By TraversTravelers on Thursday, February 27, 2003 - 06:40 am: IT'S A SAD DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD...
In the military, everyone has a title. Private Smith, Sergeant Smith, Captain Smith, etc. Officers are typically addressed as "sir." However, when you address them by their name, you of course, proceed it by their rank. I fall into a different category, because I am a warrant officer (2% of the Army is made up of warrant officers). Warrant officers, when addressed by their name are called "mister." So it would be Mister Smith. My last name is Rogers. So when addressed by name, it's "Mr. Rogers." If I had a dollar for every person who has addresses me by this title, and then realized it was the same as the guy on television, and then started joking about "How's everything in the neighborhood" I could have retired a few years ago. Indeed, it's a sad day in the neighborhood. Randy |

Scott & Jo, cool you went to both Crash & Burn shows! One thing I also remember from the Oakland show, is that they were having such a good night, they did a second encore of Makes no Difference, after Statesboro Blues. Don't know if they did that in San Fran, or if the radio simulcast just stopped before that. I also have a bad quality boot from that tour in Detroit, and there's no Makes No Difference on that one either, so I'm thinking that was something special in Oakland! San Fran probably sounded a lot better if you were there, as the mix on the radio show was awful! Pat also did a special encore of Makes No Difference on the Black Pearl tour, in San Diego, another killer show that will always stand out in my memory! 3rd row tickets right in front of Pat, at the Fox Theater, downtown. Randall, were you there? Cheers! Steve Z |

Had to keep the "just for fun" out of the "absolutely no fun". Just for fun, taking a look at the cover of Go For What You Know, can anyone tell what note/chord Pat is playing? (assuming standard tuning, if that matters!) And if so, is there a guess at what song he is playing? Or, does someone named Ed, Bruce, or hell, Blu, Strat, Gin, Randy, Steve, Randy, gREG, Cindy, TraversChickFan, Daryl, Texas Rich, etc. know what tune he is playing because you just know!? I think it's cool to look at a picture and be able to say, "He was playing Gettin' Betta right then! He was at that part where he goes "chicka-chicka!" I'm almost pretty sure I am the only one who gives a rat's @$$ about this, but maybe that's a good thing! Later...Jim

Hey Ginbels, Got the DVDs yesterday! Thank You, Thank You, Thank You I've only previewed them a bit at this point, but here (for those interested) is my Siskel & Ebert type review: Pat Travers Live 1976 (Rockpalast -Germany): -your are right when you say "This the true diamond of the Pat Travers video collection! We rate this a perfect 10 out of 10!" People should keep in mind that this was German TV broadcast from 1976. Having said that, I can't believe how clean the picture and stereo sound are. I can't believe that it's even in stereo, boy where they thinking ahead when they made this back in '76. Europe was so far ahead of America (technicaly) back then. I don't think we had any kind of stereo broadcast here in the states much before the late 80's? I give this DVD 5 stars (perfect) and highly recommend it for any PTB fan of that era (Makin' Magic). "Just Another Killer Day" w/bonus videos: "Just Another Killer Day": Excellant quality sound and video. I have an original VHS copy of this and the DVD transfer is very faithful to the original (nice job!) "I'd Rather See You Dead" bonus video: boy what memories this brings back. Not the audio/video quality of "Another Killer Day", but probably the best that's currently available "I La La La Love You" bonus video: Never before released and probably from the same video sessions of "I'd Rather See You Dead". Not the audio/video quality of "Another Killer Day", but probably the best that's currently available (I can sum up the quality of "I'd Rahter See You Dead" & "I La La La Love You" as good. They both seem to have suffered the fate of most early 80's videos. Most early 80's videos that you still see on MTV classic or VH1 exhibit slight sound and picture degradation. Still a must have for any PT fan, especially those who actually remember seeing "I'd Rather See You Dead" on MTV all those years ago!) "Ice Queen" bonus video: Very interesting video, showing some nice inside footage of the PTB in the studio, on the road and in concert. This appears to be a sort of professionaly produced video that has some camcorder/home movie type of footage in it. The production credits at the end list Sean Shannon (PT's drummer at the time) as the one who produced/filmed (?) it. "Lookin' Up" bonus video: Probably my least favorite on the DVD. Appears to be a one camcorder club shoot w/shakey grainy video and bootleg quality audio. It does have an interesting perspective to it though and overall found it to be a nice capper to the DVD itself -SUPER SAVER DVD Vol. 1: "Cherokee, NC 5/1/93" very interesting footage of this lineup. Also a one camcorder club shoot. Camera work is a bit shakey and audio is a bit distorted lacking low end. Bootleg quality, but an interesting documentation of that period. Similiar to "Boom Boom -Live in Toronto", I actually prefer the '93 lineup because I felt that Kevin Neal was better drummer than Scott Zymowski. Kevin had more of the feel that was on Pat's early songs like Life In London and Gettin' Betta. I give it 3 stars (out of 5) "Sight and Sound 1977": Ginbel is correct in saying "Rating 4 or 5 (out of 10). This is an incredibly rare film at the release of Putting it Straight lp. The video is hardly what I would call great, but what makes this collectable is seeing a very young Pat Travers(still has Canadian accent!) playing with the young Mars Cowling. Sooo much energy these guys had together! You should see Pats fingers at work! Anyway the video is a little bonus in addition to the Cherokee show and worthwhile having in your collection." I'd also like to add that while the film and audio have not fared well over the years, it is probably the best that's out there and a must have for any PT fan. The historical signifigance of this show from '77, can't be overstated! In short: Get these, get them all! ps -hey Ginbels, I e-mailed you a few days back asking for your rating and price on the "San Diego '99 DVD. Let me know. |

Thanx for the review. Pretty acurate. We have always tried to be realistic about out material. The SanDiego show I would give an 8. It it is a two camera shoot and to have Wiser Man on video or any other way is worth the price of addmission alone! By the way... the NYE DVD is going to be a perfect 10(even the Russian judge..LOL!) True Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound DOUBLE DVD set. Way too much information for just one. Switchable camera angles also. This means as you are watching you will be able to (from your remote) choose between 3 different camera angles. Also you will have some listening options as well! Too cool!! Just give me some time. This is an enormous project to have all these feature. I figure this was the ONLY way to go... all the way!! |

No, Steve, I didn't make the Fox show -- regretted missing it instantly, because the band went on a year-and-a-half tour of everywhere else right after the show. Saw Rush/PT, my first PT show, and was blown away. Also saw the tour with Def Leppard, and a couple of shows with BOC. Then a bunch of club dates down here, with Foghat among others in the late eighties/early nineties. Howdy, Carl |

Ok, lot's of people/things to address here! Daryl, thanks a bunch for coming out last night! Sorry I didn't have a chance to chat with you more, it got rather hectic! Let me know how your shots came out! Ed, don't know if you made it or not! TraversChickFan, how was the Zep tribute last night? I have heard of them, but haven't seen them. There seems to be one in almost every town! (Luckily for us, not in AZ!) :-) Blu, definitely keep Zepagain in mind for Reno, or any other PT opener! We'd be into doing it for sure! We are in AZ April 11/12, so wouldn't be available if it happens then, but if not, let me know! And finally, the Great White tragedy weighs heavy on me still. We dedicated 'The Rain Song' last noght to the nearly 100 who lost their life for no other reason than going out to party & hear some live music. Very sad. A friend of mine plays in a cover band that guitarist Ty Longley sometimes played in, and had nothing but great things to say about the guy. Definitely, a very dark day... Cheers, Steve Z |

Greetings All I just wanted to let everyone know that after years of collecting PT stuff (25+ years) I've decided to share some of it. I'm not mad at anybody I just ran out of room in my house so I must part with some of it. Other than ED I might have one of the largest PT collections. The only things I'm parting with is stuff I have two or three copies of. So keep an eye on Ebay. I listed 4 album and concert posters a few days ago. People claim that there is no PT sheet music available. Well I just listed a copy of Is This Love. Most of this stuff will be rare or real hard to find. Just to give you a hint on what will be listed soon. How about Tommy, Sandy and Sean drum sticks or a Mars guitar pick (real rare). There will be promo items and some surprises. Other than that. Hope life is treating you all well.............. PTROCKS Bruce |

Found this at a guitar player forum. Cheers, Randy **************************** Heat in the Street is a deep album, and the deeper you dig the more you'll uncover. The overall flow could be better -- the last two songs are a real departure after six songs of ass-kicking rock, but this a great album nonetheless. So let's listen. Track By Track (vocal cues in parentheses) Heat In The Street (4:23) Kicking things off with a bang, the intro has Travers and Thrall feeding back and bending the necks on their guitars before kicking into the main riff at 0:11. This tune has a very complicated arrangement and a lot of time signature changes! The main riff (The pressure's all I'm feelin') is in 13/8 and based on a fairly simple I-IV blues progression, but the timing makes it sound a lot harder than it is. At 0:52, we kick in to the prechorus (Comin' 'round ta see ya), which again is based on a standard blues type riff, but this time in 7/4. Then, back to 13/8 for the chorus at 1:04 (You know you got what I want). At 1:45, we switch to a bridge riff, which is in 4/4 and again, a pretty standard blues rock chord progression. A modulation from A to C occurs at 2:11, and then back to the chorus. At 2:33, the solo section starts off with Travers playing a very Trower-esque rhythm figure with an Echoplex thrown in to make things interesting, while Thrall takes the first lead starting at 2:46. Using an Echoplex set to produce rhythmic delays, he peels off a series of 16th note runs before landing on some sustained bent notes and passing the ball to Travers at 3:12, where we also have another modulation to C. Travers rips off some nasty, wah drenched pentatonic licks before pealing off a wicked little lick at 3:22 to end the solo section and return us to the main riff (The temperature is climbin'). This is followed up with another prechorus and then a final chorus. Quite a workout, and a great example of how blues progressions can be spiced up and made a lot more interesting than the standard I-IV-V forms employed by a certain hat wearing Texan. Killers Instinct (5:10) A great, ballsy, riff stomper. Dino Dave loves stuff like this! This one opens up with Travers ripping through a Leslie speaker and the band punching, before settling into a major pentatonic groove with a short intro solo from Travers (I'm mean, I'm hard and I feel all right). Again, the riffs are basic blues box forms, with Travers adding short leads before each verse. At 1:53 there's a short bridge section (and I'll never stop this runnin') where every modulation effect in the world is employed on the rhythm guitars, before heading into the solo at 2:19. Travers opens up with some right hand hammer-ons ala Billy Gibbons, before settling into some major pentatonic licks, which he reels off with a slashing, hacking pick attack. From 2:38 - 2:43, we hear one of Travers' trademarks kick in - the MXR Blue Box, which was a combination octave doubler and distortion box, run through a flanger. It's a very unique sound (probably most familiar from Jimmy Page's solo on Fool in the Rain). At 3:47 the song goes into a coda section which features 3 guitars trading off licks before ending up in a three part harmony for the rideout. There's a lot going on in here. (Hear it!) Judging from the sound of the guitars on this track, I'm pretty sure that Thrall does not appear on it. All of the lead work is definitely Travers. Thrall is generally more fluid and smoother, and his tone is less biting. Travers has an extremely hard picking attack and a squeaky, biting edge to his lead sound, where the pick attack is very audible. I Tried To Believe (5:06) This is a mellower track, opening with big chords, a Leslie speaker, and some more neck bending before settling into the verse (You can't imagine). Thrall plays a lot on this track, adding some very jazzy leads to the prechorus sections while Travers fills in underneath. The solo section starts out with Travers again in the major pentatonic mode. Thrall then takes over playing off the changes with some more jazzy lines, before ending the solo with a pentatonic flurry. This is a dense track, with organ and acoustic guitar employed as well as the electric guitars. It's a nice change of pace from the first two tracks, and sets us up for the next one. Hammerhead (3:05) World, meet Tommy Aldridge! This is an instrumental workout that borders on speedmetal, and Aldridge rises to the occasion with some outstanding double bass work reminiscent of what he played with Gary Moore on Dallas Warhead. The bass line is also noteworthy, as Cowling does much more than just ride the root of the chord - he's all over the place. No leads on this, but some great ensemble playing from the entire band. The track ends with what sounds like a slide through the blue box and delay, and Travers screaming into the pickups. A hot track, and it shows just what this band was capable of. Go All Night (4:23) This ode to cocaine and wild women is a funky rocker with some nice rhythm work from both guitarists. This one really moves -- the live version on on the Go For What you Know is even hotter! It's clearly influenced by the dance music that was popular at the time, yet it sounds nothing like a dance track. Travers plays some funky octave and chord parts while Thrall doubles the bass riff. Travers takes a short solo at 1:09, again with the Echoplex cranked. The main solo hits at 2:26 (Look out) and is pretty standard minor pentatonic stuff, but delivered with amp melting intensity. (Hear it!) Evie (4:14) This is a hot blues rocker, featuring a call-and-response structure reminiscent of Black Dog. There are a lot of guitar harmonies on this track, with Travers and Thrall trading off licks at the end before ending with a massive dive bomb into a sustained 'E' note. A decent track for what it is. Derivative, but well-executed. Prelude (3:42) Travers goes progressive on us with this piano driven instrumental. It opens with some dense, fed back harmonies, treating the guitar almost like a string section, over a simple piano part. Cowling plays some great bass in the intro. This is a very orchestrated track with a lot of guitars, and the approach to the arrangement is almost classical in nature. Maybe the closest equivalent would be some of Brian May's work with Queen. One For Me And One For You (6:18) A synth driven, very pop ballad that really doesn't sound much like the rest of the album, and an odd ending for an album that has been kicking ass until this point. Travers moves over to keys on this tune and hands the guitar reins to Thrall, who responds with some really nice stuff. It opens with Travers playing a simple pattern on the organ before kicking the band in. Thrall harmonizes the organ line heading into the verse, (It's over now, we really tried) where he plays fills between the vocal lines. His tone is full and very chorused. At around 2:19, the feel of the song switches to a pseudo reggae groove, with Thrall playing a harmonized chordal solo before settling into some reggae skanks. At 3:45 Travers plays a synth solo, followed by Thrall at 4:23 on guitar with a similar harmonized chordal approach to the first solo. The song ends with Thrall playing a series of echoed volume swells through an Echoplex. Summary This is the album that put Pat Thrall and Tommy Aldridge on the map. Had they joined Travers after Hughes/Thrall and Ozzy respectively, the Pat Travers Band would have been called a supergroup -- and deservedly so. But as Dino Dave exclaimed upon hearing this album for the first time: "what the hell happened to this Pat Travers?" Did someone say ALD? Not exactly. More like Stevie Ray Vaughan syndrome. This sister malady to ALD turns Dino rock guitarists into hat-worshipping, blooze-playing shells of their former selves. In the late 80's Travers began recording for Mike Varney's Blues Bureau label and continues to tour the US, playing small clubs. The Blues Bureau releases are complete and should be avoided at all costs! They're not even good blues records. They make nice coasters, but then, AOL discs still come in the mail for free. Unfortunately, Heat in the Street was never a huge seller, and you're really going to have to hunt to find it on CD. It has never been released in the U.S. on CD, but there are imports floating around from Japan and Holland on the Internet. The best place to look is EBay, which is where I recently found a copy after ten years of looking! |

Wow, after that Randy review I'm pooped out to read anymore. Randy - call Musician Magazine or Rolling Stone and see if you can get a job as a review writer. Sheesh. Brian - We'll be keeping an eye on your band for opening engagements. Your website is very cool. Ed thanks for your email - be looking forward to the answers. Remember I need at least 6 months to promote a successful show and to do it justice. S9ooo if there is a link from No. Cal let me know. Also still want the July-Aug show. That would be 3-4 months after the No-Cal tour so it would be enough time in between. Montrose and Pat. -- Trower is now bocking about leaving England without any other substantial offers except mine, but I'm still trying. I may have to replace RT with Judas Priest. I've been in heavy discussions with them. Thanks Texas Rich. Let's see if Pat will tour with Anysley or be interested in Jeff Martin. We know that Tommy won the Whitesnake auditions and Jeff came in a close second. Your base player buddy Mario told you that! Simon from AC/DC on bass - wow man - your'e really on track. Take care everyone - PT is "da man". - Blu |

Ed, thanks bro!! I appreciate it! Tomorrow in Anaheim, absolutely, you're in. I'd love to have the show video'ed. Now, the HoB can sometimes get anal about these things, so I'll do my best to get it cleared when we're there for soundcheck. We should be able to get a video pass for you, that you can pick up when you go to Will Call to get in. HoB Anaheim is a little better to work with than Sunset on things like this, so hopefully it will go smoothly! The opening act is on at 8, and we're on at 9. I'll come out & look for ya before we go on! Cheers! Steve Z |
