Hello to all!
I am new to this board.
The first time I saw PT was back in 1981. It was Krokus, PT, and Rainbow (JLT).
The thing I remember most was when I was purchasing my tickets from the "TicketBastard" guy. I asked for two tickets for the Rainbow concert and he quickly corrected me and sarcastically asked "Don't you mean the PT concert?"
Being naive I really didn't know what he meant at the time but soon found out. I have been a fan ever since and attend every area show possible.
I can't wait for the new tour dates to be announced. Hopefully the Chicago area is part of it.
Regards,
Stever

P.S. Happy B-day Cindy! Whoever you may be.

Here's an interesting question. With everyone doing covers & tribute CD's these days, who would you like to see do a cover of a PT song and what song would it be, should somebody release a "Tribute To PT" CD? I know Jimmy "Big Pipe" Beseau likes cover tunes, so he'll have some suggestions. Anybody else?

Here's a few of my suggestions...

ZZ Top - "Snortin' Whiskey"
Montrose(with Sammy Hagar) - "Heat In The Street"
Steve Lukather - "Makin' Magic"
Deep Purple(with John Lord on Hammond B-3, Ian Gillian vocals & Steve Morse guitar) - "Crash & Burn"
UFO (with Michael Schenker) - "Life In London"
Tony Bennett & David Gilmour - "Play It Like You See It"
Steve Vai, Joe Satriani & Stu Hamm - "Hammerhead"
Van Halen (with DLR) - "Hot Shot"
Iggy Pop - "I Don't Wanna Be Awake"
Zakk Wylde - "Wiser Man"

You get the idea...Could be a killer release! Mike Varney are you reading this? LOL!

Good idea Rockpig. Right now I can only come up with a few. First I have to agree with Blur...
Metallica-Hammerhead
then,
Lenny Kravitz-Evie
Tesla-Makin'Magic
I'll bet I come up with some more tomorrow. Oh, when there is a show somewhere here in the Northwest, I would love to meet any and all of the "PTB Northwest Chapter."

How about Stone Temple Pilots for Heat In The Street? They would do quite well the non-conforming timing on that song. Lenny Kravitz on "Evie" would be totally awesome and a great fit. I'd also dig Snoop Dogg on "Go All Night" since that had a rap feel to the lyrical style.

Red Hot Chili Peppers- Hooked On Music
Aerosmith-Killer's Instinct
Kiss-It Ain't What it Seems
Judas Priest-Wiser Man
Guns n Roses-I Don't Care
Loverboy-Crash and Burn
Beck-Politician
Def Leppard-Is This Love
Cry of Love-Heat in the Street
Extreme-I Tried to Beleive
King's X-Can't Escape the Fire
Of course I'm talking about all of the original band members for this lineup.

Robin Trower with James Dewar on vocals - Hooked On Music & It Makes No Difference
Judas Priest - Guitars From Hell
Walter Trout - The Pain
Rush - Crash And Burn
Guns & Roses - Disappear

I'm sure I could think of more, but somehow I can't help but think someone covering Pat's music would be sacrilegious. I'm not too sure anyone could do justice to it.

Posted on Thursday, November 17, 2005 - 12:06 pm:

Specks, I was thinking either Iron Maiden or Thin Lizzy for Guitars From Hell, both our choices obviously inspired by the twin guitar attack!

I'm digging Whitesnake/David Coverdale for Your Love Can't Be Right! I can hear him now, kind of the Here I Go Again style.

There used to be this metal band called Leather Wolf. They had 3 guitar players!! Hammerhead is a must for them! Can you imaging three guitars in three part harmony!? Wowsers!

And I'm hearing Tesla on I Tried To Believe. That singer has some good pipes and they always did some good stuff!

And we need one for Night Ranger since Brad Gillis has some PTB ties, doesn't he?! I think he filled in on some dates after Randy Rhoads died as did Pat. Did I imagine this? Maybe I la-la-la Love You. Maybe.

More - Later...

Hey Blur, I was agreeing with you on Monae's choice of the Kravitz "Evie" selection. Sorry for any confusion.

Beseau, talk about evil geniuses thinking alike! I was about to post Coverdale for the same damn song, or possibly "What'cha Gonna Do Without Me"! Are we twin brothers in parallel universes? Also, who's gonna sing the tune you chose for Brad Gillis?

Specs...Regarding anyone covering Travers tunes, I understand what you mean about no one doing it better. That's a given, but people doing covers is so common these days (always has been now that I think about it!). But think about this...Have you ever heard the original version of "Boom Boom OGTL" by Willie McTell? While it's a fun little blues oldie, I certainly think Ol' PT took it to a whole 'nother level and made it his own! I'm betting there are people out there who think Pat wrote that tune! Same with "Born Under A Bad Sign". Lot's of people have covered it, but PT does the best cover, in my opinion. I like the original (such a cool riff!), but damn, PT's is really good! And stop to consider that Pat has done WHOLE albums of nothing but covers! So, covers can be a cool thing and it's a chance for other musicians to pay their respects to their influences, in this case PT (who we'd all agree deserves a bit more respect from the music community/business). Nobody will ever do PT better than PT, but it's always cool to hear someone else's interpretation. Heck, I bet even PT would be flattered in his own modest way that other people would cover his tunes! By the way, I really like your suggestion of Priest covering "Guitars From Hell"! That would sound pretty amazing! On a different note, I'm glad to hear things are better for you now after the divorce. Gettin' Betta indeed!

And as always...PTB is King!

RP-that's what I figured but you know I'm quite the modest one. I'm absolutely loving the selections I've seen thus far. The variety of artists that we've selected to cover Pat's tunes is a great testimonial to the diversity of Pat's music. He's cover more ground than any other musician I know, yet somehow it always rocks like a MFer.

Hey strat, I understand what you're saying and I've said it myself many times. When Pat covers a song 9 times out of 10 his version is better then the original. Born Under A Bad Sign, (nobody does this on as good as Pat) Boom Boom, Whippin Post, Statesboro Blues, I guess I'll Go Away, the list is endless. Pat deserves his props and one day he will get them (hopefully before he quits or dies). I'm just afraid his songs wouldn't be done justice. I rather enjoy hearing Pat cover other band's music. Many times, I've never heard the song before and it kind of makes it like a new P.T. song for me. This was the case with Black Friday and Spanish Moon.
Ok, a couple more,
Dream Theater - Crash And Burn and The Big Event
Ted Nugent - Snortin Whiskey
Johnny Cash (I know, he's dead) - Hot Rod Lincoln
Jimi Hendrix - Anything in Pat's catalog.

Hey Hammerheads!

Strat, that was a good idea you had. It's entertaining just reading all the ideas and trying to imagine these people/groups singing PTB songs, but I'd have to agree with Specs about these groups not doing PTB song's any justice. I like Pat doing covers of other songs, and actually think HIS versions sound the way the original is supposed to sound! PTB ROXX!!

Cindy, Happy Be-lated Birthday, sister! (Twisted and otherwise!!) :)

Specsmagoo, life's too short to be unhappy. Glad things are working out for you. In your case, the grass IS greener on the other side!! Live well, Love much, Laugh often.....oh, and listen to PTB!!!!

Hey Specs,

Hot Rod Lincoln is not a PT original, so it wouldn't really qualify on a PT Tribute CD, but having said that, I'd like to see Robert Randolph cover that one! If you're not familiar with Robert, he's worth looking into. He's a wired out frenetic slide steel guitar player that is a real kick in the pants to watch. He is energy overload! He'd do Hot Rod Lincoln some serious justice!

And on our continuing discussion about PT & covers, while it might not sound as good as some of the recommendations that have come forth here, I think it would be good for some of these young upstart bands to do some PT covers and expose some of the next generation to PT's musical brilliance. In a perfect world, the kids of today could learn about PT just like you learned about other artists from the covers PT did.

And gREG, what scares me is that you're probably NOT kidding with your covers suggestions! You are twisted up my friend!

I'm not exactly in an upstart band, but Ive been spreading PTs music in various bands since 1982. Some of the PT songs or covers I have inflicted upon audiences (even my own band mates) over the years include:

I La La La Love You
Id Rather See you Dead
Agwanna Kick Booty
Stevie
Misty Morning
Statesboro Blues
Boom Boom
Killer
Dusty Blues
Chevrolet
I've Got News For You
A Good Fool Is Hard To Find
Whipping Post

The last 4 are still in our current song rotation. I love me some PT guitar playing and I see him play every chance I get.

Hey, thanks for all of the credit you guys. I have just a tiny little brain, but it's mine.
Last night when I asked my husband who he would like to hear cover any PT tunes, his answer was, "no one." So I guess he feels the same. Of course no one could do the songs as well as PT, but it sure would be fun to hear some of the bands mentioned play the songs suggested.
Oh, I almost forgot, I was able to see Cry of Love a long time ago (I think maybe twice). I will have to dig through my ticket stubs to see exactly when, early 90's I think. The one I remember was a pretty small venue, but a great performance.
Also, before I forget again...happy belated Birthday Cindy. Hope it was a good one.

I am being threatened with my passport being suspended, my assets frozen and jail time. Please understand I cannot return until this situation had been resolved.

WHEW

Just caught up on posts since I hadn't been on the site for well over a week! YIKES! Had a crash and burn with the wife, which cost me a few days of alcohol blindness, but we got through it. Thanks for the support, Jimbo, gREG and Piglet. That meant ALOT. Took a few sober days off -- then went to see Rolling Stones in Vegas. now THAT kicked my ass! Went to Ronnie's art gallery showing at Mandalay Bay and bought four pieces -- one Hendrix, Ronnie's birthplace in Ireland, a nude (woman, thank you) and I think one of Mick. It's all a bit hazy now . . . Got to smack Ronnie on the shoulder as the security goons whisked him through the crowd a couple of times -- pretty lame, since I heard he actually TALKED to some folks last year! Anyhoo . . . the Stones were a hoot. Was great to see 'em again, since the last tour I spent $300 for a ticket but . . . let's just say didn't get to see 'em! Found out vicodin and shots of liquor don't mix with gallons of beer -- who knew

Happy Birthday, Cind! woo HOO!! bet yer STILL laying on the floor. I HAD to take a break after this tour, so haven't had a drop since Saturday and that's a start. Grace is having tummy tuck surgery et al, so it's me and the boys for a few weeks taking care of stuff.

In fact, I've gotta go cook dinner but before I do here's my choice for the PT covers:

STEHM doing the current setlist at the Rick Navarro Presidential Inaugural!!! right ON! With special guests, ALL Hammerheads who can operate a pick or a stick! And headlined by the PTB doing all STEHM's originals! less DO it! hahahaha

many good choices there. Atta way to use the noodle, Pig, what a cool idea!

bye fer now -- it's good to be back home -- among FRIENDS. thank you all fer bein here

Milwaukee gets a P.T. show. An early Christmas present if you will? S*cks it's on a Tuesday night but beggers can't be choosers. Eric, any chance we can meet up? Yo Fermenter - Care to tip a few before during and or after? First one's on me. Looks like I may be coming down with a case of P.T.itis. Ya all know that disease? Symptoms include a sh*t eating grin caused because you can't believe what you have just witnessed, ringing ears, feelings of happiness and contentment, which cause over indulgence, which causes one to miss work the day after. It's believable, isn't it? I'd buy it. Tickets are going quick - http://www.ticketweb.com/user/?region=wi&query=detail&event=639460

Hey, Ed
I just finished reading a book on Rainbow with all sorts of interviews from pretty much anybody ever associated with the band. JLT, mentions that story on Jealous Lover as well as many others.
How about this - JLT late 20's unemployed, looking for work, living around NYC in a studio apartment with a few other guys gets a call out of the blue from RB's personal manager. He's asking all kinds of crazy questions, talking about DP and RB. JLT doesn't believe a word, Ritchie comes on the phone, tells JLT he is a fan of his voice & to come now and audition.
JLT hops on a Subway, sings I Surrender, gets asked to join the band, they put him in an hotel, buy him clothes and doesn't go back to the apartment.
Say what they will about TMIB, he sure knows talent, the vocalists' alone he has introduced to the big time, include, Gillan, Dio, Coverdale, Hughes, Bonnet, Turner, White.
This book also mentions Ritchie and the boy's playing soccer with the PTB whilst on tour, back in the day.

Hmmm.. if they remastered the masters for the box set... cool. Otherwise.... Caveat Emptor! Sad, really that the "LDS" releases are still the best for some of Pat's stuff. Maybe someone should send Majestic a real master. Scary thought... what if those are the best available from the original tapes? I find it hard to believe. Even still they owe it to Pat to fix the master tape(s). Sh*t, send it to me. Yeah right... like that would happen! LOL! Would be cool to have Pat sit down with a real engineer(not me) and go over the masters (if needed). Just a plain shame as Frampton (copied). I tell you one thing.. you guys are an amazing wealth of rock info!!!! I wish I had half the time to check out all the suggested listening!! Most of what I have been privy to has been excellent! The Pat tribute CD suggestions were right on!!!! I like the Eric Clapton comment! Actually most of old Clapton is kinda weak(to me). His latter work ie. sound track from "rush" and the colaberation with Paul McCartney and Clymie Sample(DJ) on "T.D.F." - "Retail Therapy" are just genius or at least perfectly composed and performed/mixed. Nice! Soooo... anyway. Nice to seee everyone posting! Hey I hope everyone is having a beautiful evening! Just about everyone has off tommorrow. Nanc and I are getting ready for baby. We are so psyched!!!!!!!!!!! Lots of work going on around the homestead. We are digging a giant hole in our back yard so we can fit gREGs pool in it after we steal it! Can't wait to plunge into that baby! So cool, you own your own oasis! Prick! LOL! Actually gREG, your witicism on the brain remastering was perfect! I had a recording of AC/DC's Back in Black, that I had recorded from a scratched record and in between the bell gonging there was a scratch on the off beat. When I finally got the CD, I actually missed hearing the scratch!! LOL! I'm over it now.

Peace out, Hammerheads, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

What time do they play?!!

Seriously, is that going to be cool or what? Pat with another guitarist in HIS band, not on stage guesting!! I'm so stoked! And jonesing so bad for a live PTB fix! Wowsers!

Anybody digging 30 Seconds To Mars yet? I know The Pigus knows of them, has them in his vastly infinite collection. First two cd's are really good. First one real spacey, second one a tad bit more radio oriented, but very good nonetheless. And don't get me wrong, I am not a music snob. Just because it's on the radio doesn't mean it's crap. Nor does it mean it's good. I like a lot of mainstream, but thanks to many of you, I know and like a lot more non-mainstream. Anywhoozle, going to see 30STM Monday at a cool dive in Fort Worth on the South Side! SOUTHSIDE!! YO! My man Mike provides the hook-up! Props Mike! It's symbiotic though! He get's me and a friend in and we buy twice the amount of liquor we would have on a paid admission! He's a smart feller!

Well I've been out of touch!
Peabodys moved (I don't know when)to behind the old Raskel House on E.21st. Should still be a small "clublike" place to see Pat.
Doors open at 7:00pm
Peabodys website states openong bands as; Rick Ray Band,TBS,BMZ. That would make for a long night!
Ticketmasters website states opening bands as Blindside Blues Band.
What's up with that????

Tourdates are looking good! Here's hoping for a SoCal date when the boys hit the Left Coast!

Had a relaxing weekend in Vegas, and finally saw the Queen 'We Will Rock You' musical Sat night, before it played its final show last night. Was pretty cool, and the backup band did a great job with the music. BOC's Danny Miranda, who's been doing the Queen + Paul Rodgers shows, was there on bass.

Bette, yeah, that's my old Queen tribute, Sheer Heart Attack, in that movie. Cool that it's still showing! The Kiss stuff is a real riot!

Cheers!

Damn, Steve, I didn't realize that show was gonna stop so soon. Coulda seen 'em a couple of times, but thought I had more time.

Yeah gREG, you called it -- I just about had a damned sheer heart attack watching that game! and sober to boot . . . can you believe I amde it a week Saturday? and almost a week before ht Stones show . . . hahaha but what did you expect for THAT one.

Bette-that's the way I remember the movie. They auditioned a new lead singer to play the role of Mercury and the guy was a joke. Had a beer gut that rivaled mine and sang like a train wreck. Not exactly what you're looking for in a front man.

Okay...what gives?

I just came across a live PTB version of Dedication, sounds current, with a sax player, an acoustic guitar, and maybe some keyboard...maybe. Where did this come from?! Wowsers! Never heard that song live. What a tune!

Anybody? Anybody? Bueller??

Blur, that's about right, LOL! Our singer moved to Germany to do Cats, and he's now in Lion King on Broadway. We looked at singers for a while, then pretty much gave up. The one auditioning in the film was the last one we looked at.

Funnily enough, our drummer's now in another Queen tribute called Under Pressure. They've opened for Zepagain a few times, and I've sat in with them, and even once had a whole Sheer Heart Attack reunion with their singer for one song!

Queen & Paul Rodgers just announced a new US tour, dates over at http://www.queenpluspaulrodgers.com

Jbseau-that's the "PTB 2004" cd that was sold at a few shows early this year. I believe it was recorded a few years ago at the Freebird Cafe but never made it as an official release. Should also have "Off Beat Ride" on it. Les Dudek is a guest guitarist and the sax player played for Hall & Oates back in the day. Can't remember his name. It's a very good release and has some songs I never imagined I'd hear live at this point in Pat's career. Pat's solo on Dedication is a thing of beauty.

If so I will look for it at the show.

GFL on finding that PTB 2004 cd, Fermenter. I have heard about it before, in dark rooms and alley ways, always in whispered tones while nervously looking over shoulders...

I don't have it Fermenter or I would offer you to "borrow" it if you wanted. The quality from the song I have, Dedication, seems quite nice. Mind you, I was listening to an .mp3, headphones, dark closet, white noise machine going in background, tv up loud to mask any loose noises...well, you get the picture. Good luck on your mission, Mr. Phelps.

just kidding. I'll send four pints of AB negative blood and my pink boa to the San Diego Blood Bank in your name if you'll burn me a copy anyone! LOL But seriously, I would very much like to find a copy of PTB 2004 somewhere!
C'mon, lemme try out my new CD burner . . .

Steve, thanks for the heads-up. Tix for the San Diego show of Queen + PR go on presale tomorrow, so I'll get two of the Gold package. April Fool's Day! Vegas sounds good, but I'll settle for here 'cause it's hard for me to see that far ahead and to know where I'll be in space and time.

Looking good on the PTB tour -- Northwesterners, git ready 'cause even though I expect SoCal dates I plan to join you in God's Country for a show or two as well.

Who do that Rams play this weekend -- anybody? Seattle clinches the NFC West (sorry gREG, kinda) with a win over the Eagles and a St. Louis loss. Getting excited! But we can't have another close one like last week -- I think that poor performance will help us get serious on Sunday.

and finally, you guys would crack up. Since I just had surgery on my right index finger for arthritis, I'm playing my new five-string Carvin bass with three fingers! It's a trick, but last Saturday I cheated and used my splint as a slide/pick! hahaha

Just recently obtained cassette copies of "Hot Shot" & "School Of Hard Knocks".

Having the vinyl of "Hot Shot" for over 20 years, I must say that this good clean cassette copy is quite refreshing. I've put it to CD-R. :)

I was never happy with the vinyl as it sounded quite distorted & fuzzy (especially the last two songs on each side). Over the years , I've sampled numerous vinyl copies (some still sealed & never palyed) and they were all pretty much the same -distorted & fuzzy sounding (like a worn out jukebox record).

It is a very loud & rockin' album, so apparently they didn't take care when mastering it for vinyl.

Anyway, I making the offer I've always made: any hammerheads out there want a free CD-R of "Hot Shot" taken from cassette, then email me at lawrence.tucker@corporate.ge.com

One caveat is that there is some slight intermittent squeaking in the last minute of "Night Into Day". But it shouldn't detract from your listen enjoyment. As the seller of the item told me "the cassette is almost 20 years old".

S.H.; OK then I will try my best. It is a night out after all.

A couple more I wish they would play;
Go All Night
Off Beat Ride ( yah, now I'm dreaming)
Crash and Burn ( I have seen them do that!)
Stop and Smile (A personal fav./ nice imaging)
Inside Looking Out (cover tune, I know)

Chew on those while you wait!

The guitar imaging on Stop and Smile is so neat, I wonder if they were altering the phase during the mix way back then. Seems like more than simple panning left to right.

Cheers everybody!!!

Okay. WOW!!! Just got our butt kicked at the Annapolis show!!! F$#!ing FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! First off Kirk and Frank are excellent!! The did a full version of Heat. Oh my GOD!!! The crowd sat there with thier jaws dropped open!!! Sooooo tight! Perfect! Pat is in such great shape and playing at the very top of his game. He has never sounded this good!!! The band is just flawless. Eric of course keeping the whole thing together. The set list I can't exactly recall. I don't Care was on it as was Born, Boom, and Elijah. Heat just blew me away though. First off the room was mixed nice and the boys were just on. You GOT to go see these guys!!

Thanks for the review, yes, haven't seen Heat done live in quite a while! And 2 guitars is the way that one needs to be done!

Zepfanus, I remeber The Stone very well, in fact, I got to open for PT there once back in about '86! My band was booked there already, then PT came through and sold out both the Stone & Keystone Palo Alto (which I saw), so they quickly re-booked him for a week later for both venues. Just so happened to be the night my band was booked at the Stone! Those were the first PT shows I'd seen with Jerry Riggs, and they were both great. Ah yes, the memories!

WOW, I can't WAIT! New PTB -- studio and live?? New set lists! Can it be true? YES, says I, it CAN and IS! BE there, Hammerheads and Hummerheads.

I can vouch for Pat being on fire lately, but can only imagine the torching he'll give us in this 4-piece lineup!

Hey Steve, I got two tix to the San Diego Queen = PR show in the presale today. Paid for teh gold package, $ 395 each, and got tickets ont eh floor in the second section back at Cox Arena which should be like seeing them in my living room (the Camp Heinie alumni know that means intimate). woo HOO! That'll be a thrill, as I've been Paul solo and with The Firm, but never saw Queen or Bad Company. Dare I dub this Bad Queen?? not a good fit, as I hear fantastic things from Stevie Viable and others . . .

Yeah gREG, the Beagles will get plucked on Monday Night Football! Seahawks clinch. Strat and Gettin' Bette, get ready to buy tickets to Detroit!
